The first and second-ranked nations square off in an intriguing friendly at Audi Field in Washington on Saturday (2:30 p.m. ET, Peacock), and I’m backing the world champions to beat the Olympic champions in my USWNT vs. Spain prediction.

Spain are the +105 betting favorite in both teams' first match since June. Along with expecting a Spain victory, I look at how many goals will be scored and whether Claudia Pina can continue her scintillating form in front of goal.

Spain ML (+105 via FanDuel)

While neither team has played since June, Spain won their previous three matches by a combined 15-1. One of those results was an emphatic 4-0 triumph over England, the reigning European champions.

Since losing to England on penalties in the European Championship final, Spain have tasted defeat once in nine matches. The USWNT lost one of two to Brazil in June and are missing instrumental first-team players, center-back Naomi Girma and defensive midfielder Sam Coffey.

That gives the No. 1-ranked team enough of an edge to beat No. 2. I’m banking on a 2-1 Spain victory.

📡 SBR Edge: Spain’s extended dominance

Spain have lost 10 of 104 matches in the previous six years. And their only regulation-time defeat in the last 27 matches came against England on April 14, a 1-0 setback.

Score prediction: Spain 2, USWNT 1

Over 2.5 goals (-120)

With neither team playing in four months, I don’t expect the sharpest match. Timing and cohesiveness could be slightly off for both teams, opening the door to more uncharacteristic mistakes.

I’m also looking at the USWNT's spine dubiously, as Girma and Coffey, both injured, usually provide stability, assurance, and superb defensive awareness.

In addition, three of the USWNT’s last five matches had at least three goals.

Claudia Pina anytime goal (+200)

Pina has been on point early in the season. She has an outrageous nine goals in five matches, only four of which she started.

She enters the friendly bursting with confidence and in fantastic form after bagging six goals in the previous two matches, two against Roma in the Champions League and four versus Real Madrid in a Liga F encounter.

She also scored a goal in each of Spain’s last two friendlies against Iceland and England.
