The Carolina Hurricanes host the New York Rangers at PNC Arena looking to stave off elimination in Thursday's Game 6, as we offer our Rangers vs. Hurricanes predictions based on the best NHL odds

Facing a challenge as monumental as scaling Mount Everest without supplemental oxygen, the Carolina Hurricanes are embarking on a quest to accomplish one of the most improbable feats in sports history: rallying from a 0-3 series deficit to advance to the next round.

Historically, teams trailing 0-3 in a series have only managed to win four out of 209 times. However, after securing victories in Games 4 and 5, the Hurricanes now find themselves favored as they head into Game 6 at PNC Arena in Raleigh, N.C. The game, potentially setting the stage for a decisive Game 7 on Saturday, is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. ET and will be broadcasted on TNT.

Despite the Hurricanes' resurgence, the New York Rangers still maintain the third-shortest Stanley Cup odds. However, with two wins in their recent streak, the Hurricanes are narrowing the gap. A victory on Thursday would further solidify their position as legitimate contenders for the cup.

Along with our Oilers vs. Canucks predictions, here are our best Rangers vs. Hurricanes predictions and NHL picks (odds via our best NHL betting sites; pick confidence based on a 1-to-5-star scale).

Rangers vs. Hurricanes predictions for Thursday

Under 5.5 goals ⭐⭐⭐⭐

The Under has hit in two of five games between these bitter enemies. Five of 10 Hurricanes' playoff contests had five or fewer goals, while four of the nine Rangers' games hit the Under. Those stats aren't convincing either way.

However, given the circumstances, I'm focussing on how much is at stake for both teams, leaning toward a defensive battle. Both were among the seven best defensive teams in the regular season, and the Hurricanes have allowed 2.60 goals per game at home during the playoffs, the second-fewest behind the Florida Panthers.

They haven't allowed more than three goals at PNC Arena in 13 consecutive playoff games. The last time they conceded four goals was against the Rangers in Game 7 of the 2021-22 playoffs. On the other side of the gate imperiously stands Igor Shesterkin, who has allowed more than three goals once in the last 31 playoff contests. Neither team will want to make a costly mistake nor take a penalty, further encouragement for backing the Under.

Three of our five best sports betting apps offer odds of -120. Those odds imply a 56.5% probability, and a winning $10 bet pays a profit of $8.33

Jake Guentzel anytime goal ⭐⭐⭐

I'm going back to the well with this prop, expecting Jake Guentzel to come up big in a pivotal moment. Guentzel didn't light the lamp in Games 4 and 5 but scored three in the previous two. He has 11 goals in as many playoff games against the Blueshirts, including one in Game 7 of the 2021-22 playoffs as a member of the Pittsburgh Penguins.

He had two shots in Game 5 and six in Game 4, the last time he played at PNC Arena. At +180, FanDuel offers the best value. The tasty plus-money odds come with an implied probability of 35.71%, highlighting what Guentzel is up against. However, he has enjoyed disproportionate success against the Rangers in the postseason, one of the main reasons to have faith. A $10 winning bet will pay a profit of $18.

Vincent Trocheck Over 2.5 shots ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Vincent Trocheck fired at least three shots on goal in six of nine games thus far, including in four of five outings against the Hurricanes. He had six points in the first three games of the series before being held off the scoresheet in the last two. Trocheck's influence on the Rangers' success cannot be overstated. He is one of the most physical forwards on the team and should be able to match the intensity of the Hurricanes' big, bad, bruising defensive core.

At -113, FanDuel offers excellent value. DraftKings offers -140, bet365 -150, BetMGM and Caesars -143. FanDuel's odds will likely shorten in the next 24 hours, so lock it in while you can. The -113 odds imply a probability of 53.05%, and a winning $10 wager pays a profit of $8.85.

Best odds: -113 via FanDuel
