Rory McIlroy is the favorite over Max Homa, Rose Zhang, and Lexi Thompson by The Match odds from our best golf betting sites for the event's ninth edition on Monday evening.

The ninth edition of The Match begins on Monday. This time, it'll feature both a new format, and new competitors.

This year's version of one of golf's annual spectacles will be played at The Park in West Palm Beach, Fla., with Rory McIlroy dealing as a slight betting favorite over Max Homa, Rose Zhang, and Lexi Thompson. Zhang and Thompson - stars on the LPGA - represent the women's tour for the first time in this annual (at least) exhibition of golf.

The made-for-TV (and betting) event will have the four golfers competing in a 12-hole skins match with the money won going to charity.

Favorites to win The Match

Rory McIlroy (+200 via DraftKings)

McIlroy comes into The Match as the best-known and most decorated of the four competitors. The Northern Irishman is a four-time major winner and enters the week at No. 2 in the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR).

It's somewhat surprising that McIlroy has appeared in only one edition of The Match to date, and that was as a partner to good friend Tiger Woods. The solo format this year should suit McIlroy as the most accomplished golfer participating but bettors should note that he is by the Cognizant Classic odds for the PGA Tour event that'll begin Thursday at PGA National in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.

These odds are still enticing with a $10 bet returning a profit of $20 on a winning ticket.

Max Homa (+250 via BetMGM)

Homa has been regularly getting mic'd up during his rounds of PGA Tour events since the concept was introduced to broadcasts last season. He's a crowd favorite and seemingly has the perfect personality to fit this style of event that always features plenty of trash-talking.

Homa enters the week at No. 8 in the OWGR as a six-time PGA Tour winner. The last of those victories came in the 2023 Farmers Insurance Open, but he also won the DP World Tour's Nedbank Golf Challenge in mid-November.

Rose Zhang (+350 via BetMGM)

Zhang, 20, will tee it up on Monday while sitting 21st in the Rolex Women's World Golf Rankings. Her 2024 season began with a T-7 finish in the Hilton Grand Vacations Tournament of Champions.

The young star claimed her first LPGA win in June, and she finished T-9 or better in three of the four majors she competed in last year.

Zhang - and Thompson - will play from different tees than the men for the par 4s and par 5s.

Lexi Thompson (+350 via BetMGM)

Thompson participated in the Shriners Children's Open in the fall but missed the cut despite a strong second round of 2-under 69. The former major winner (2014 Chevron Championship) is currently 36th in the Rolex Rankings following a T-16 finish in the LPGA Drive On Championship.

The Match format 2024

The format for the ninth edition of The Match will be the first of its kind. The four golfers will compete individually in a 12-hole skins competition in which each hole carries a dollar amount to be awarded to the player who cards the lowest score on that hole. If any two or more golfers tie on a hole, that prize amount carries forward to the next hole(s).

Whoever has won the most skins (holes) at the end is declared the winner, and the money will go to a charity of their choosing.

As noted above, Zhang and Thompson will play from different tees than McIlroy and Homa on the par 4s and 5s, but all four golfers will hit from the same tee deck on the par 3s.

How to bet on golf

Betting on golf involves understanding the various types of bets available and how to assess player performance. First, familiarize yourself with the different types of bets commonly offered in golf, including outright winner bets, each-way bets (which cover both a win and a top finish), head-to-head matchups between two players, and proposition bets on specific events within a tournament, such as hole-in-one occurrences or individual player performances on certain holes.

Once you've identified the types of bets you're interested in, research the players, course conditions, recent form, and other relevant factors that could influence outcomes. Pay attention to factors like player statistics, recent tournament performances, course history, and any injuries or changes in form that may affect a player's performance.
