The Rocket Classic third-round leader market takes the spotlight this week as the PGA Tour returns to Detroit Golf Club in Detroit, Michigan. A strong field will take aim at one of the PGA Tour's most birdie-friendly courses while chasing valuable FedEx Cup points ahead of the postseason.

Detroit Golf Club encourages an aggressive approach, featuring wide fairways, scorable par 5s, and plenty of birdie chances throughout the round. While low scores are available, inconsistent iron play or mistakes around the greens can quickly erase momentum. That dynamic makes the third-round leader market particularly appealing, as players who dial in their approach shots and roll the putter well on Saturday are well-positioned to climb the leaderboard and create separation heading into the final round.

β›³ Who'll lead the Rocket Classic after Round 3?

Doug Ghim (+2900)

Doug Ghim enters Saturday with plenty of momentum at 8-under, sitting two shots behind the lead and well within striking distance of the top spot. His accurate ball-striking and reliable iron play are ideal for Detroit Golf Club, where creating birdie opportunities is the key to climbing the leaderboard.

Ghim has consistently put himself in contention by avoiding costly mistakes while taking advantage of scoring holes. If he continues to hit quality approach shots and converts his birdie chances with the putter, he has an excellent opportunity to finish the day as the third-round leader.

Xander Schauffele (+1425)

Xander Schauffele enters Saturday in an excellent position to make a run at the third-round lead. At 8-under, he sits just two shots behind the leader, giving him plenty of opportunities to climb the leaderboard early. Schauffele's elite ball-striking and consistent iron play make him a perfect fit for Detroit Golf Club, where birdies are essential.

He has a proven track record of posting low rounds when in contention and rarely lets opportunities slip away. If his putter heats up on Saturday, Schauffele has all the tools needed to finish the day atop the leaderboard.

Cameron Young (+250)

Cameron Young is in a prime position to finish Saturday as the third-round leader after opening the weekend tied for the lead at 10-under. His length off the tee gives him a significant advantage at Detroit Golf Club, allowing him to attack reachable par 5s and create frequent birdie opportunities.

Young has the firepower to separate himself when his irons and putter get rolling, making him one of the most dangerous scorers in the field. If he continues to capitalize on scoring chances, he has an excellent opportunity to hold the outright lead heading into Sunday's final round.

⏰️ When are third-round leader bets paid out?

The third-round leader market is decided once everyone in the field has completed their first 54 holes. This may be Sunday morning in the event of a weather or darkness delay.

β›… What to consider when betting on the third-round leader

Betting on the third-round leader of any golf tournament is far different than betting on the tournament winner or any prop market.

Here are the factors I always consider with my third-round leader picks:

  • Tee times
  • Weather
  • Course history
  • Round 1 + 2 scoring average
  • Recent form
  • Key stats for the week

The third-round leader betting market is much more volatile than the 72-hole event. As such, the odds for the tournament favorites are higher in this market, and the odds for the long shots are generally slightly shorter when betting on the 36-hole sample.

Early tee times are typically best to target for your picks. Courses are often at their softest and easiest, with no divots in the fairways or wear on the greens. But the weather can significantly change that line of thought. Monitor the weather to be sure your desired golfers will be dodging the worst of the rain and wind, should any be in the forecast.

I also greatly reduce my timeframe when looking at recent performance entering Saturday's third round.
