Major League Baseball’s Washington Nationals became the latest North American Sports franchise to jump on the legal sports betting operator partnership train when it was announced Monday that they have entered an exclusive multi-year partnership with casino and gaming giant MGM Resorts International.

The Nationals are just the latest in the long line of professional franchises that has seen the writing on the wall and is ready to embrace the legal sports betting industry in order to elevate their brand. MGM is already the official gaming partner of the MLB and this deal builds on the strong relationship the provider has with baseball on the whole.

“The Nationals are thrilled to expand our strong partnership with MGM Resorts into the sports betting realm,” said Alan Gottlieb, Chief Operating Officer of Lerner Sports Group. “As our Official Sports Betting Partner, BetMGM will further enhance the greatest in-venue fan experience in Washington, D.C. through its state-of-the-art entertainment products and services. The BetMGM mobile app will enable our fans to engage with the game in new and exciting ways, while the BetMGM Sportsbook connected to Nationals Park will provide Nationals fans and the D.C. community with a first-class gathering place to celebrate their passion for sports together.”

The Deal

The partnership will take the shape of many of the other deals that have been signed the last year or so. BetMGM gains the right to use the Nationals brand, including all Washington Nationals IP, marks, and logos across all of its digital platforms. It also includes BetMGM branding inside Nationals Park as well as on the team’s social media and digital platforms.

BetMGM gains typical and valuable sponsorship opportunities as well as crucial brand visibility anywhere the team has a presence.

The partnership’s elevated nature comes in the form of the launch of a BetMGM Sportsbook connected to Nationals Park, located in the area currently dubbed Center Field Social, across Center Field Plaza from the Nationals Team Store. It also includes the launch of BetMGM’s top-tier mobile app that will be available within a two-block are area around the Park.

The in-stadium sportsbook is geared to provide customers with a second-to-none and all-encompassing sports viewing experience, building on the atmosphere of the existing in the stadium.

Other Benefits

Nationals fans will be treated to some exclusive offers from BetMGM. Included are in-game betting opportunities specific to Nationals fans using the BetMGM app. MGM Resorts’ best-in-class loyalty program, MGM Resorts’ M life Rewards and Red Carpet Rewards will also come to those who frequent the BetMGM platform at Nationals Park or in the DC area.

Jorge Perez, President & COO, MGM National Harbor, said, “I can’t think of a better extension to MGM National Harbor’s long-standing partnership with the Washington Nationals. Fans will have the opportunity to experience America’s pastime in the most innovative and exciting way possible. We are thrilled to continue bringing world-class entertainment to the DMV.”

Matt Prevost, chief revenue officer at BetMGM, recently said of the newly signed Nationals partnership: “This new partnership with the Nationals is our most in-depth partnership with a team and showcases the multitude of ways we’re able to engage fans in and out of stadiums. We’re extremely excited to work together to create unique experiences for Nationals fans and the broader DC metro area during and after games.”

DC’s Stadium Betting Edge

Washington, DC has not shied away from allowing their legal sports betting scene spill over into the venues where its professional sports teams play. Nationals Park becomes the third such stadium in the DC area that will house a legal sportsbook and will allow on-site betting via mobile apps.

Prior to the Nationals’ deal, William Hill opened and is now running a sportsbook at Capital One Arena where the Capitals and Wizards play and Audi Field, home of Major League Soccer’s D.C. United will be home to its own sportsbook starting later this year.

Building on BetMGM Brand

BetMGM continues to be one of the envies of the US legal sports betting industry. The company keeps hitting the right notes during this time of rapid expansion of legalized gambling in the country. BetMGM is now live in 11 states with Virginia not that far off and the company has partnered with some of the more storied franchises in the nation.

Look for BetMGM to be in the conversation to become Official Sports Betting Partners of other teams going forward. Their proven track record and almost unmatched experience in the wagering space is becoming tough to ignore as states, leagues and individual teams tether themselves to one of the most successful brands in the market.
