Defending Super Bowl champion teams have played in the NFL opener of the following season for each of the past six years heading into Wednesday, but those teams have covered the spread in only two of those six openers.

Not since 2016 have we seen a Super Bowl rematch to open the next campaign, when the defending champion Broncos beat the Panthers, 21-20 -- but didn’t cover the 3-point spread. With Patriots +3.5 available from several sportsbooks and recent history favoring hotly-contested openers for reigning champs, I like the underdog to keep it within a field goal. 

Rhamondre Stevenson Over 55.5 rushing yards (-114)

With TreVeyon Henderson held out of practice for the last two weeks, including the most recent update from Monday, Rhamondre Stevenson is going to be the entire show in the Patriots backfield for Week 1.

At just 3.3 YPC, he didn’t run particularly well in the Super Bowl. But that game script saw the Pats playing from behind, so he only garnered seven carries while splitting duties with Henderson. With Henderson trending strongly toward missing the game, Stevenson should get plenty of volume in our projected script that sees New England keeping the game competitive.

Jadarian Price Over 1.5 receptions (+124)

Just because Jadarian Price didn’t catch many passes at Notre Dame when he shared a RB room with Jeremiyah Love doesn’t mean he can’t do it. Price has impressed coaches with the versatility of his skill set, and the betting market is undervaluing his potential involvement through the air due to an expectation that George Holani will get the third-down snaps.

Receptions for Price should correlate to the Patriots keeping this game competitive or perhaps even staking out a lead that forces Seattle to the air with more frequency. The plus-money odds on this prop are attractive for our SGP.
