LeBron James officially entered free agency this month after eight seasons with the Los Angeles Lakers. Prediction market Kalshi has now become one of the more closely watched gauges of where the four-time MVP might land next. So far, the market monitoring the NBA star’s next team has generated $170 million in trading volume.

Pricing on the platform swung sharply over the weekend, with the Miami Heat climbing to a 53% chance of landing James before settling back near 46% by Tuesday. The Cleveland Cavaliers follow at 27%, the Golden State Warriors sit at 14%, and the Philadelphia 76ers trail at 13%.

Kalshi also runs a separate market on timing. As of Tuesday, traders priced roughly a 78% chance that James will announce his choice before July 26, a figure that has climbed steadily as reporting on a possible Heat reunion intensified. Earlier estimates for a decision on July 21 hovered around 40%.

James' agent, Rich Paul, reportedly told teams earlier this month that his client was weighing 10 possible destinations, including the 76ers, Cavaliers, Denver Nuggets, Minnesota Timberwolves, Heat, New York Knicks, Warriors, Dallas Mavericks, Boston Celtics, and San Antonio Spurs.

The wait recalls James' past free agency turns, most notably his 2010 announcement on ESPN that he was leaving Cleveland for Miami, a moment that reshaped how NBA stars control their own narratives during the offseason. Prediction market apps' live pricing has effectively become a modern stand-in for that same speculation, updating in real time as fresh reports move the market.

Kalshi's World Cup surge

That LeBron market represents just a sliver of Kalshi's recent growth, which got a much bigger jolt from this year's World Cup. The company told CNBC it added three million new users over the course of the tournament, which ran from June 11 through Sunday's final, when Spain defeated Argentina 1-0.

Kalshi's contract tied to picking the World Cup champion drew more than $1.2 billion in trading activity, a record for any individual market on the platform, while total World Cup-related volume across Kalshi topped $24.2 billion.

The company took advantage of soccer's global popularity to drive the numbers, striking a stadium co-branding arrangement with ADI Predictstreet, which has become the official prediction market sponsor of FIFA. It also worked with OpenAI, so its odds would surface inside ChatGPT searches related to matches.

According to Kalshi founder and CEO Tarek Mansour, the company's approach favors speed and relevance over chasing volume for its own sake. He also acknowledged that trading tends to dip on days without matches before other events push activity back up.

Sports contracts still carry regulatory uncertainty, however, as several states argue such wagers amount to sports betting, a dispute that has produced a number of lawsuits.
