I see you keep mentioning the last time Canbet sent offers out. Well On the 20/12 they sent me Newsletter email with the following..

    Place a Head to Head bet on The Ashes 4th Test match;

If a player on your team scores a century but that team lose the match, Canbet will refund your losing bet up to £100/€100/$100*

I have 'cash back special' offers from Canbet as well, up to December 24, 2013.

But I think we were mostly concerned with the 100% deposit bonuses.

These 100% bonuses that were "randomly" sent out ? Well I missed mine while I was away on holiday so emailed them to see if I was still eligible and mine was added manually. WAFOLS they are talking..

    Hi Alex
I started my small claim on the 30/12/13. Went through the whole process, bailiffs and everything. Canbet never replied once to the courts. Nothing there for the bailiffs. Payed something like £280. I have a feeling your better off saving your money as the Canbet directors will eventually be in the dock anyway. Any one with any more advice to Alex, please do.

Explanation of exemption applied – section 31
Section 31(1)(g) of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (FOIA) (‘Law enforcement’) provides that information held by a public authority is exempt if its disclosure would or would be likely to prejudice the exercise of a public authority of its functions including “the purpose of ascertaining whether circumstances which would justify regulatory action in pursuance of any enactment exist or may arise” (s.31(2)(c)).
Section 31 is a qualified exemption so we are required to consider whether maintaining the exemption is in the public interest.
    In favour of disclosure
There is a legitimate public interest in promoting the accountability and transparency of public authorities. There is also an interest in highlighting instances of non-compliance within the industry in order to promote compliance from other operators.
A large number of people have been affected by the failure of Canbet to pay its customers.
There is also an interest in the public understanding how the Commission investigates matters of non-compliance and that if there are any failings in this process that these are exposed.
In favour of maintaining the exemption
The Commission has provided updates regarding this case via the Commission website.
The information requested is in relation to a very specific case so disclosure would not be of general public interest. It is of interest to those directly affected by the current situation.
Disclosure is likely to prejudice the Commission’s ability to investigate such matters in the future if the bodies it regulates feel they cannot be candid with it regarding its regulatory investigations. This is not in the public interest as it would have a negative impact upon our ability to carry out our statutory functions.
The case is still currently ongoing and disclosure would prejudice the Commission’s ability to engage with the operator.
    Weighing the balance
Having considered the balance of the public interest, the Commission is of the view that disclosing this level of detail would be likely to negatively impact on the openness the Commission expects from operators. The balance of the public interest lies in operators being encouraged to make timely and frank submissions to the Commission when incidents occur to allow the Commission to take appropriate steps in a timely manner.

So can the UK Gambling Commission please define what they mean by "in a timely manner"? Contrary to what they have publicly stated, the Commission was made aware of Canbet's behaviour back in October. In the 6 weeks since Canbet has stopped trading, the Commission's updates have not only been infrequent, but have contained very little substance. As such, their refusal to release correspondence between their body and Canbet should come as no surprise. It makes you wonder just how unruly a company needs to act before this UK government-funded body starts representing the people it was set up to protect - ie. the punters.

Let's hope ASIC has more success in obtaining all Freedom of Information requests. It will make for very interesting reading.

I would have thought finding out what was said by who, would indeed be "in the public interest". But UK Gambling Commission obviously beg to differ.

They know heat is on them as well for not overseeing Canbet properly. I didn't think they would release information that probably incriminates them further. ASIC is going to have to make the request or another law enforcement agency.

FOI request turned down same as everyone else. In other words what the GC are saying is that they can't release this information as the investigation is "ongoing" My reply to them was something like this:

    I note your reply.

Let me remind you that it is US the players at Canbet and not you the Commission who are owed money. I find your stance on this totally unacceptable and your so called updates on your website have been nothing short of pathetic. I shall shortly be raising concerns with my local Member Of Parliament over this matter as it is high time that the Gambling Commission's role as an organisation must now surely and correctly come under serious scrutiny. In addition to this I will be raising these concerns with several UK media sources. The truth is slowly beginning to unravel on this whole Canbet fiasco and it would appear that you the Gambling Commission and the Canbet directors have some very troubled times ahead of you indeed. (And rightly so. You both have a lot to answer for.) Skeletons don't like living in closets and the collective will of the people and the internet will ensure that the truth will prevail.

It was suggested that customers looking for their money to be returned may have to wait a long time. Ben Ashworth, who is owed about $2000 has begun legal action in the United Kingdom to retrieve his money after waiting almost three months, saying the promises have come to nothing so far. "I’m worried that ... there will be other victims in the future,"

Is this guy Ben Ashworth in this thread. very good work done by him. we all shoud join him

Here's a bit more context about how the Gambling Commission have been dealing with this issue "in a timely manner". Refer to the date of each tweet. (Thanks to Richard for allowing me to show his original tweet.)

Plenty more screenshots to come.... oh and if you're in the UK, make sure you sign this petition to bring them to account. So far there's 107 signatories and 500 is the magic number. So please inform your friends who may only be occasional punters with other books, but who care about a fair and just industry.

Gotta love how the GC has time to have an active twitter account but can't keep up on the finances of a book they license.

Guys I'm sure we are still low balling the amount owed by a lot, we need to continue to reach out to forums especially those in other languages. I see on a lot of forums threads about this topic but most die off in December, we need to get those active again and refer the people to here.

Although when it comes to using twitter to provide long-suffering customers of Canbet informative answers to their questions, they're pretty inept. Here's a couple of examples of their finest work:

I already did almost everything that I can, but it seems that on this thread there are only small number of people which try something. Many of newcomers just read this thread a couple of months, doing nothing at that time. Now after Shari made list , and pulled things up, many of them said that "registered here ONLY to add their name on the list", and again to do nothing more . Great job, just expecting that couple of people here do all, and they can't even to compose some mail with their story and send to British and AUS newspaper, although many of them are native English speakers(I am not, but did that). So if all you people want your money, do something, instead just reading this thread.

Just so everyone who has joined this thread recently is up to date with what the UK Gambling Commission's position was on 31st December, here is their public statement once again:

How are you responding to complaints about Canbet?

    31 December, 2013

The Gambling Commission understands that Canbet has suspended its operating activity with regard to taking bets and new deposits from 31 December 2013. We have written to the operator expressing our considerable concern and explaining that we are actively considering the commencement of a review of Canbet’s operating licence.

We have asked Canbet for reassurances that they will:

not accept any bets or new deposits for the foreseeable future

continue to pay out those customers who have outstanding balances

provide a progress report by 6 January 2014, to include details of the amounts still outstanding to existing customers, the number of customers affected and the timescale within which they will be paid.

We have also requested a further report from Canbet’s auditors to confirm that the company has the finances in place to meet its existing obligations.

Suffice to say, we have not been told by the GC if a progress report was indeed received by 6th January. This is almost 6 weeks ago! If any of you are in contact with media outlets and journalists, please stress this point to them.

I am doubtful that anyone is in contact with journalists, most of people here just read this and do nothing.
