The guy seeks to go on this journey because at his core he is unsatisfied with his daily grind of work, marriage, etc and he is seeking an exit from the daily stress of his domestication.

This is not to suggest that his marriage is not strong or that his work is not worthy, but that deep down he wants more: he wants to board a ship, sail to the New World and walk into the forest with naught more than a knife and his wits.

He is motivated to make this journey not to bet on sports, but to bet on himself.

He's willing to risk his career and marriage for the chance to win the battle against his discontent.

This is not that necessarily a bad thing.

This journey can be cathartic and he can learn and grow and move on -- he can "win".

Verily, his "bet" on himself must win, or else he will remain unsatisfied and his marriage and career will fail.

Luckily for him, his winning his bet on himself has nothing to do with the amount of money he wins or loses betting on sports, but rather if he can gain perspective. He needs to realize that his happiness must come from within himself and that the discontent he feels that he needs to escape from can be dispelled from within his own mind.

That's why he is moving to Vegas. (and if his wife is in tune with his real reasons, it is probably the reason she is agreeing to let him go.)
    Wow your good.

No it is not needed there. I have no desire to rub me leaving a profession in a young persons face when they can not get a job. I was fortunate I did very well at my agency and have a solid rep. I have stayed out of trouble and illegal habits picked up by some police that's not to say I haven't made poor decisions in the past and thankfully they did not effect my career. I have known many bookies as I have grown in my career. I just always knew the danger and stayed away.

About three years ago after a very successful NBA betting trip to Vegas, I decided to try and find a way to beat the NBA. I spent over two months researching and came to conclusion that I could not beat it, by trends or stat tracking. That was around spring training 2008. I then began my MLB research. It started as a chase system as I thought I could beat the system. As the year grew on I realized although I was winning I was risking 17 units for 1 in return. during the next offseason I dug deeper and deeper and continued to try and find the answer. Eventually I came to the conclusion that betting straight would do better in the long run. I then tracked the 2009 baseball season and was a 89K winner. I was ecstatic, I wanted to quit my job and run to Vegas. I was pretty sure I was on to something. Hell 2008 was a 65k winner using chase and 2009 was a 89k winner betting straight. I thought I was golden. Around this same time, my department hit a financial crunch and put us on furloughs and locked raises for the foreseen future. I told myself I would track the 2010 season and if it was a winner I would seriously consider moving to Vegas. As the 2010 season approached I became anxious and almost hoped it would be a complete disaster so that I could go back to my life and forget about Vegas. This however did not happen. I won 85K in VIRTUAL money. At the end of 2010 I was excited and scared at the same time it was just unreal. Maybe 85k to you guys is chump change, but to me it is worth taking a shot. Especially since you the other 7 months of the year I could live at home, finish college take care of my kids, maybe even start my own IT company that I have been thinking of for years.

This thread was not for approval, I love to play devils advocate and love when a forum member tells me something I do not know so I can plan ahead for it.

I know what separates me from most. If I fail, I can admit I failed and move on. I will always provide for my wife and kids.

So you guys wanted to know if I had kids. Yes 3 girls. Thats 3 college tuition's, 3 weddings. Shit adds up. I know one thing I will not be able to do that on two cops salary's like we have in my family.

So the goal is to play and go to school online. If I can finish my BS I got a real chance of landing a higher paying IT job with my police background.

So I got a choice, change departments (very difficult I am involved in a civil lawsuit that has been going on for 3 years). Live at my salary for the next 3 to 5 years without a raise. Or take a risky shot at making good money.

I do not expect to hear everyone complement my move. Most people are happy with the norm. I was to for years. However I know I can make what I make now anytime.

somebody started a thread earlier today talking about why people on the forum wanted other members to fail.

I know why. Its just like Nicky said in that old video. Friends want you to loose at gambling, It gives the non better a rush when his friends loose at gambling. Thats why we root for the car wreck in NASCAR.

I will prob be posting on here as the time gets closer. I am not betting NBA or NCAA or NFL so I really have no betting opinion as of now. I got to focus and get ready for MLB.

I just read this entire thread. I think most of you guys are jerks but I think you are right. I wish I had the balls to do what this guy's doing but you've also got to realize the odds are heavily heavily stacked against you. Sometimes it's best to just not make a bet. But I agree with the lvbound guy, that you should't live with regrets. Why do you want to touch that hot stove though? I actually have more money than he has and I really don't think 40K is enough. Let's say you had 100K, and made 20% of your bank roll, is 20K really enough to live on in Las freaking Vegas? So tell me what the plan is.

You have 40K and you want to turn it into how much?
    By when?
You just want to sustain yourself there, or you want to "make it big" or what?
How much will you bet per week?
You are going to work a job at night to pay living expenses, make money, make connections?
You sound like drinking/partying is going to be a big part of it... if I go I would do that too ( dumb) but pleasureable.
I think you are going there for "the life", because you could bet offshore and do the exact some thing somewhere else.
"The Vegas night life" has the ability to fcuk you in the a$$. The city revolves around money. 20 dollars = 2 cents.

PS. How much do the club promoters make? Say the guy's standing in front of XS on a crowded weekend night? I hear the people in Vegas are notoriously lazy, many of them stupid, and they like the East Coast work ethic. I think about moving to Vegas like this guy, but sometimes it's just best to lay off. Might be a fun adventure, might give you a degree in the school of hard knocks, but then what?

I spoke to some of my bosses last week so they are aware I am leaving, but now it will be final. As most of you know and some of you might not, I am going to give professional sports betting a shot. I have planned for almost 3 years and just can’t take it anymore. I must either do it or not do it and get on with my life.
I had a long talk with my wife last month and she gave me the green light under one condition. I stick to the plan and do not deviate when things are going bad. I agreed and we were able to come to an understanding of what would happen. Some of her biggest fears, where things like “What do I tell my friends you do for a living?”. I told her to tell them I had a job lined up at Levis in Henderson. I really feel for her, because I wouldn’t know how to handle it. The crazy part is If I said I was a pro poker player, it might not look so bad. Telling my mother was also very difficult and I know it broke her heart when I said I would be giving up a police pension for a shot at professional sports betting.
Sometimes I think I am crazy and just chasing a dream, while sometimes I feel that dreams are made to be chased and if I don’t try I will regret it for the rest of my life. I have begun to read the book Falling Forward by Jack Maxwell and it is a great book. He is an aspiring author and his blog fight your dreams really inspired me http://johnmaxwellonleadership.com/2...reams-in-2011/ this is a must read.
I will be leaving for Vegas on March 30th and will stay for the first week in a casino until I lock down a low cost furnished apartment close by. I then will stay there until mid-September if all goes good. I will be making frequent trips back to Florida to see the family. It is looking like about 120 after taxes for a one way ticket most times with a week notice.
My bankroll will be around 25k and I will have around 15k locked up at home to fall back on if I do not succeed. I will also be looking for an evening job in Vegas to pay for my Vegas living expenses. Any type of security night club work should be easy for me to get with my background.
I want to thank everyone I have met on the forum and met in person at the bash. Every one of you in one way or another has helped me come to my decision.
I look forward to the challenge that lies ahead of me.
    Thank you for your support!

    Matt
Slow down, bud. Unless you insist on moving away from your family to do something you can do where you live now, and take a lesser job to make this 'dream' possible. (If you want to redefine 'sucker bet', you're well on your way).

What you're saying makes so little sense that it seems to me you're using Vegas as an excuse to get out of a life that has become boring to you. You're running away. Vegas will love you, but I doubt the feeling will be mutual.

Dutch, what is your experience with life? It's easy to tell someone over the internet they should go and live your dream but it carries serious and real consequences. It sounds as if you wish you could do the same. Do you have kids or a wife? College?

yeah the fact that you can get your job back makes the world of difference. I don't get the issue with betting online though. Isn't it just a legal gray area? You could definitely still place bets somehow. Either way go big or go home I guess, but don't be a dumbass and stay passed 6 months if you're barely making it by.

It's always better to have tried and failed then to have never tried at all. That being said the risk/ reward of government work and retirement versus the unreliable and hideous nature of professional gambling is one career change/ option that doesn't have a safe exit strategy.

Rule number 1 in betting & business, don't put yourself into a corner.
