Oh fish I am glad you reminded me.

I forgot to tell you guys

#1 I hate Florida except for Tampa
    #2 I had the humidity
    #3 I hate the heat
#4 Did I say I cant stand Florida?

Ok now I want to retire and die in South Lake Tahoe
    I love the mountains
I love lakes that you can swim in with no ******* gators or snakes
    I love the snow
I love hot weather without humidity
I love to be able to wake up any time of the day play cards or throw some dice for fun.
I love being able to walk into a casino like the B and bet 50 on a ball game and drink all night for free (Back home I go to the ale house and spend 50 on food and drinks with no bet)

Horrible move; you are giving up a government job which you can retire at 55 and still get full pension.

Sorry but your professional gambling career is a pipe dream.

Many better betting options online with reduced juice and constant bonus offers which do not require you to leave your wife behind and have to burden yourself with paying for 2 residences and costs of flying to and from florida. The fact that you do not recognize that you do not have to move to vegas to pursue life as a gambler is very alarming to me and leads me to believe that you do not yet have the experience to accomplish this goal. Probably 95% of players who play professionally do not live anywhere near vegas.

Why can you not quit your job and make your living from florida????
After I've read the other posts, and LVBounds responses, I can honestly say there's more to this drama and decision. Seeing all of the wagers he's already laying on the line such as family/kids, pension, etc. and he saying things like "read between the lines", etc. something smells. Add to that, he was a cop who was gambling...hellooooo? and his superiors (at the Police Department) said if things don't work out he can have his job back? Am I the only one that thinks "Police Superiors" wouldn't be exactly happy knowing one of the officers is/was a gambler? Something doesn't meet the smell test here.

As someone that actually went ahead and moved to Vegas, let me tell you it's not easy, but with hard work and patience, you can make it. The west coast is a lot different than the East coast. the atitudes are different and the people here are transient. Don't let any of the naysayers on here get you down. The ones that are telling you its a dumb move are the same people that are jealous they don't have the balls to do it themselves. PM my anytime if you have any questions about the area!!! GOOD LUCK!!

GL LV, you will need it. Keep that head on straight and kudos for following what you think is right. Half the people here wouldn't attempt to follow the little dreams they have left. You got balls man.
i am curious as to why everyone thinks he's "got balls" for pulling the trigger on this decision.

so a man who provides his wife, family with a stable living environment is gutless?? is he less of a man for doing so??

it seems to me he is running from his self proclaimed miserable life to chase a rather outlandish dream, a dream that ignores the pleas of his family.

i think it takes more balls to accept the reality of life and grind out a living everyday, even if your measure of happiness is subpar than what you would like it to be.

This decision carries with it huge rewards, but at a very improbable rate. And it appears this decision isn't as risky as first though, as LV mentioned later on in this thread that he can retain his previous position if things do not work out.

I wish the best to LV and hope he defies the odds on this choice.

Very good points all of you got and I respect every one of them. There is also a lot of truth to what burrito says.

I can and must clarify one thing. I was not a gambler as a cop. I did a lot of tracking and researching. I know what is legal and illegal so understand that.

Are we supposed to read between the lines on this also?

I remember your sig saying that you were up between 50-90K each of the past 3 years by betting from Florida.

So between the 60K+ you make as a cop, with the great retirement, and the extra 50-90K from gambling, you couldn't buy a small slice of happiness?

The most alarming part to me if hed have to make 20% of his bankroll a month just to make it. Thats almost unheard of and provides absolutely no room for error.

Gates you just don't get it. Every bet i made using my system was fake. It was real lines from different casinos in Vegas. It was a test before I dove in blind.

Also where do you get 60k from? I make 1200 after taxes every two weeks. I have not had a raise in two years and none in sight. I have to take one furlough day a month and zero ot.

Gambling is a business and your mind has to be sharp. It's not done for "fun".
    Do you drink on patrol?

If you think you have a winning system; why don't you sell your system? Many people looking for a way to win. Hope you weren't the one with the small martingale type system.
Really sounds like you just want to go to Vegas to have fun and convinced your wife too. No kids, why not bring her along?

    you're a cop.. why can't you bet with a local bookie ?
that's what all the betting cops I've ever known did..
many of them.. and their bookies are among the most protected.
there is no reason for you to do this. if you're going to be a winner
do it at home with your family. there is no taxes that way to cut into winnings.
your bankroll is a joke, no offense. I don't know how much you make being a cop
but if it's say 40k you would have to make almost 200% in the first year for this to pay off.
use your bankroll at home. Christ Almighty you would probably be better off taking the whole
bankroll there and betting it in one weekend, do or die, then come home a winner or loser.

If this whole story A-Z is true...then I wish you the best of luck. It's a tough enough business to make a few bucks, and to make it your "living" puts all the more pressure on plays. I lived there and know the highs and lows of Vegas. I have guaranteed monthly checks and I still wouldn't make the move knowing how rough it is/was.

i give you loads of respect for making this decision. this would make more sense if you had a dead end job but you dont... Can you get a police job in vegas? I'm sure you can both bet on sports and have a solid police job at the same time.

I appreciate all the comments good and bad. I take them all and see the points in all of them.

This is a somewhat crazy decision I am aware. The thing is I know for a fact I can make it if this doesn't work out. I got a wife who makes very good money and the credentials to get a great job int he private sector. The craziest part of all this is the 2 job offers I have had just since I told some friends I was leaving police work.

Step into my office and please lay down on my couch:

The OP probably doesn't realize it but betting on sports is not the real reason he is moving to Vegas. Sports betting is on the surface, but his real motivation lies deeper; that is, he's moving to Vegas for primarily psychological reasons.

The guy seeks to go on this journey because at his core he is unsatisfied with his daily grind of work, marriage, etc and he is seeking an exit from the daily stress of his domestication.

This is not to suggest that his marriage is not strong or that his work is not worthy, but that deep down he wants more: he wants to board a ship, sail to the New World and walk into the forest with naught more than a knife and his wits.

He is motivated to make this journey not to bet on sports, but to bet on himself.

He's willing to risk his career and marriage for the chance to win the battle against his discontent.

This is not that necessarily a bad thing.

This journey can be cathartic and he can learn and grow and move on -- he can "win".

Verily, his "bet" on himself must win, or else he will remain unsatisfied and his marriage and career will fail.

Luckily for him, his winning his bet on himself has nothing to do with the amount of money he wins or loses betting on sports, but rather if he can gain perspective. He needs to realize that his happiness must come from within himself and that the discontent he feels that he needs to escape from can be dispelled from within his own mind.

That's why he is moving to Vegas. (and if his wife is in tune with his real reasons, it is probably the reason she is agreeing to let him go.)
