If (big if) Trump plays the card you mentioned, there isn't much upside. He's already got that crowd locked down.
Hillary tried playing the fear card against Obama, as did McCain, as did Romney. There's definitely a segment of the population who sees terror around every corner, but catering to them won't be enough to get elected (in my opinion).
Russell Moore is a pretty influential evangelical who spoke out this week and basically called out Trump as a phony Christian. Trump is relying on them a la Bush-1 and if that base starts to show cracks, it's going to make his path a lot more difficult.
