i give jackson credit for at least trying to get those guys to play defense..he just has no talent on that team

Didn't Smart do the exact same thing? Where'd that get them?

What qualifies Jackson to be a head coach in the NBA?

Jackson's only 33 games into being a head coach, not sure how he can really be judged, you wont win without really good talent and they just arnt really the best of teams, there are plenty of Hall of Fame coaches who started out with terrible coaching records.

Smart tried to get them to play D at the start of the season last year.

Shouldn't you have to at least be an assistant for a few years before you become a head coach? They've tried the same thing in baseball -- rushing guys right from being players into managers, and it's almost always been a disaster. You have to pay your dues, especially if you want to run a winning franchise.

I think Pop is the undisputed number 1. Spurs are gonna make a deep playoff run this year on an old team full of role players.

If he sucked then what makes him so much better now, does players not have anything to do with this equation. Id like someone to show me coaches that win consistently without really good players.

Heading into this season, he'd won 152 games over the last three seasons despite Portland's well-chronicled injury problems. Turned Seattle around, then turned Portland around. I'd love to see what he could do with a full deck there.

It's kind of a chicken or the egg argument. You can also easily say you'd like to see an NBA team that's won a title without a veteran coach who's been around the block a time or twenty.

Yeah, at 1999-2003 all we got in Brazil were playoff games and internet sucked back then.

Bottom line in my experience, you need good players to win especially on the pro level making millions, in college you can get kids to buy in more and play how you want and get them to play above their level more consistently than on the pro level.

Not that I know of -- but he also had to spend eight full and often times failed years as a head coach before he won it all.

To me, Doc is the one coach you could argue wasn't "elite" that's won a ring in recent memory.

Agree that it's more of a players league than college -- which is why most great college coaches fail in the NBA. Totally different ballgame.

With that being said, you can't just roll the ball out there and expect the players to win it all.

well then i guess u cant just discount jackson already and ask if hes even qualified to be a head coach..give the guy a chance before u bash him..im sure jackson will have a few failed years too but who knows maybe he will get a player or 2 or 3 like doc and change his fate

Maybe, but I'm not sure I see the difference between Jackson and Smart. At least Smart had some bench experience when he took over.

You can put Phil Jackson on the bench for the Warriors... That team will never make the playoffs the way they are built.

Before the big three came along, Doc had never won a single playoff series, had been fired from a previous job, and was 24-58 in his second season in Boston -- an eight game decline from the year before.
