The Gambling Commission are clearly trying to hide their own incompetence by refusing to release the information. Its disgraceful they allowed a company they knew weren't paying to continue to operate for 2 1/2 months. It was only Canbet shutting up shop that stopped it, the GC did nothing.

Damn... I really wonder what percentage of people found SBR and also wanted to register and post their loss?

    Over/Under 10% of players?

    This could be millions.

Maybe an FOI request to the GC asking if they have that specifc information... the total liability owed to players. No way they can wiggle around about releasing that.

I thought the same, but highly doubtful that they will be happy to provide this information. We already saw that they can wiggle around whenever they want.

Over the weekend I have got in touch with numerous UK media sources. Mojobullfrog I took your point about the GC not confirming to anyone whether they did or did not receive the progress report due on 6 January and mentioned it to the media in my email. I have also raised my concerns regarding the GC to my local MP (a high profile Lib Dem cabinet member) and stated to him that I had a FOI request denied and mentioned that the GC citied reasons under section 43 which IMHO is wrong as Canbet stopped trading on 31 December 2013 so any such info released would have no commercial effect on Canbet. Once again and I can't stress this enough, even if you are a non UK player. PLEASE! Get in touch with the UK media.

I'm pretty sure that guy was legit.

Too many tabs open so I didn't realise I didn't hit send until now... but as expected PwC were useless but it was worth a try. As for ASIC they told me to contact them Thursday afternoon. I have no clue why though as they wouldn't say much of anything. I talked to the lawyer after and he told me it could be a sign things are happening behind the scenes on their end - again what that could be I don't know - but as we ideally want them to take the lead in this as much as possible that we should just keep doing what we have been until then ie collect names and amounts owed, blitz the media in both Aus and the UK, keep hassling the GC, etc. He was also pretty shocked by the amount of $ we've managed to account for in such a short period of time.

The one thing I didn't get the chance to do today and won't be able to do tomorrow as I have a pretty full on day happening is phone the various Racing Commissions across Aus to give them the heads up about Racing Vic's media release to alert them that they too might've been scammed by Canbet and phone Racing Vic's Integrity Commission just in case they haven't made the link that one of Canbet's directors is also a registered race horse owner. If anyone local has the time to contact them tomorrow or even just Racing Vic's IC on (03) 8684 7778 or 1300 227 225 that would be a big help. If not I can do it on Wed.

Shari, I contacted all the major state racing bodies this morning via email. If I don't get any replies in the next couple of days, I've got Wednesday off, so can make further enquiries then.

Fingers crossed ASIC are indeed putting things in place behind the scenes. It's just a shame they can't be more informative until Thursday. Agreed that we all have to be as proactive as ever now and continue to inform different media sources about this unfolding story - not just here in Australia, but definitely the UK as well, to ensure the Gambling Commission feels the heat as much as Peter and Graeme.

Yeah, the old "can't message until 10 posts" rule. Got to love it.

Yeah I've done the same. I'm searching out old forum threads on different forums trying to locate more people. I noticed a lot of threads died off in December on some sites as people gave up.

    "intelligence.live@insolvency.gsi.gov.uk"
is the address I've emailed both early and late last week and guess what, no reply.SBR are now claiming Canbet are insolvant, the insolvency services still deny this.Another poorly run government agency.
I found this on wiki talking about the GC "Main Responsibilities " to keep crime out of gambling, to ensure that gambling is conducted fairly and openly "

also "In 2014 the UK regulated online bookmaker Canbet went into receivership owing millions to customers. The demise of this site raised questions of the ability of the Commission to protect UK customers from rogue traders."

Where is this quote from? Canbet hasn't gone into receivership... IGAS has. Canbet is still officially "operating".

Edit: Oh I get it now, it's from Wiki. Whomever wrote that is incorrect.

Sorry for (Wiki') misinformation, however, it's still a decent indication of the "word spreading"

Yeah maybe but it also could've been someone in here who wrote that since anyone can post on Wikipedia. I can go to that page right now and say that I'm the new owner of Canbet. That's the dangerous thing with Wiki sometimes. But it's not our problem or responsibility... Peter and Graeme are big boys so if they ever want that corrected they can figure out how to do it themselves.

It makes you wonder what the point of the Gambling Commission actually is. Silly us for assuming they regulated the books licensed by them. They can't even admit that they should have acted much much earlier when complaints were first made to them back in October. All they can say is:

"In this case funds were quite clearly not protected according to the terms and conditions set out by the operator. This is a point we should perhaps have made more clearly at an earlier stage when people raised concerns with the Commission."

We should perhaps have made more clearly <----- ahh, "perhaps"?? Of course they damn well should have!

So our £1m* lost will now "perhaps" get them to do their jobs properly and to START protecting players??They've been in operation aka scrathing their arses for 6 years, their MAIN priority should have always been to ONLY issue licenses to books who ALWAYS protect players money. No protection No license is a simple motto and surely all books would've happily complied.Shame they didn't talk about the Auditors who "assured" them of Canbet's funds nor the FACT that many punters could've been saved from the scam if it wasn't for their incompentence of waiting 3 months to act.

Any news on the petition?I'm optimisit of the 500 and obviously all the way if we can get it into a media outlet

The only thing I agree with is I don't see the logic in taking the licence away at the moment. We have already been waiting for 4 to 5 months for our money. Without the licence Canbet is less attractive in the marketplace. I hope for all of us we get some positive news but don't know when.

dont buy this nonsense, just another bloody excuse for their incompetence.. waste of space and should be shut down. taking the licence away is not going to do anything, they ar ebust... nobody is going to buy a bust book with millions of debt, a tainted fraudalent brand and a shit website - why wouldn't anyone with an ounce of a brain do that. Old Canbet customers will never use the book that buys it will they so you buy a book with no customers, no brand, no website and millions of debt - great deal??

unfortunately, none of us are getting our money back, what needs to happen is these scumbags go to jail and the GC is shut down and all those muggy civil servants join benefits street immediately.

I am sorry but Canbet can't be less attractive than it is now, it is as low as possible, there is nothing lower than that. So GC should immediately take their license and inform the responsible authorities about lord&white FRAUD so that they are jailed and their assets sold and gamblers paid. This is the only reasonable solution. The newest "investors" story is pure delirium, I am shocked that SBR bite it.
    regarding GC's statement...
licence suspension could reduce the prospects of customers being repaid by Canbet If a company has low cash balances but appears to have reasonable prospects of refinancing and substantial assets then suspension or revocation of an operating licence is highly likely to result in the company closing and customers having less chance of being repaid.
    - just another lie to buy some time for lord&white. On the contrary, taking the license would be a very clear signal that lord&white are criminals and the beginning of the end for them. it is so strange how GC ignores all the criminal evidence but they strongly believe in some "reasonable prospects of refinancing."
