Austria Wien is a club with great tradition in Austria, having 23 Austria Bundesliga titles and 27 Austrian Cups. However, they have not won the title since 2006, Red Bull Salzburg and recently Sturm Graz getting the honors lately.

Their squad mostly contains domestic players, only 3 foreign players appeared in their last league game against Kapfenberg. Austria Wien won the game with an impressive 5-0, Roland Linz scoring 4 goals, a win that took them to the second place on the table after four games.

They are a regular presence in European competitions, mostly in Europa League/Uefa Cup, their best performance in the last decade being a qualification to the quarterfinals of the Uefa Cup in 2004/2005, eliminated by Parma on away goals.

Austria Wien reached this stage after getting through two qualifying rounds. They had no problems against Rudar Pljevlja (5-0 on agg.) but they on the brink of elimination against rather modest Slovenian team, Olimpija Ljubliana. After a goalless draw in Slovenia, Austria took the lead in the second leg, but they were equalized, a score that would have permitted the visitors to progress. However, in the 70th minute, Austria were awarded a dodgy penalty that decided the tie in their favor.
Their miserable start in the Romanian league and a tie against a poor Finnish team that gave them more troubles than it should were not signs that Gaz Metan could have any ambitions of eliminating a powerful team from Bundesliga, but they managed to make the impossible happen and ended FC Mainz’s European campaign earlier than they would ever thought.

Mainz is the leader in Bundesliga after two games played, so the performance of Medias is even more impressive. Both games of the tie ended with 1-1, so the second leg went to penalties where Medias’s goalkeeper Plesca saved two shots that and gave his team the ticket to the play-offs.

After losing the first two games in the league without scoring any goals, Gaz Metan travelled to Cluj to face CFR, a team that were coming after two impressive wins. Medias pulled of another huge surprise and took all three points after a 2-0 victory.

Parvulesc and Munteanu, two important members of the squad are still injured, but let’s not forget that Medias played against Mainz without them as well.
Austria Wien is for sure not as strong as Mainz, but let’s not forget that Bundesliga had not started at the time Mainz met Medias, so the Romanians had a slight advantage.
The Austrians won all three games that they’ve played at home this season and they might want to decide the tie at home, even though I’m sure Medias won’t let that happen.

Gaz Metan Medias has the advantage of being considered outsiders, which gives them the ability to play without pressure. Medias showed that they have the quality to play at a high level and a qualification to the group stages would mean a huge performance to this small team even by Romanian standards.
