You can't "put" people in rehab. They have to want to change. It's addiction. If $8K is enough to break someone...they shouldn't have that much in their account. Hopefully, he figures it out.

Shit man. I've been there. It's money so that's the good thing. I did this years ago except mine was credit card debt I was paying off for years. Gotta get it in control. If he's otherwise a good kid and this was his bottoming out you will be good man. Sending prayers your way bud.

Times have changed haven't they newguy? So dangerous these days to replicate that behavior

Credit card companies are begging for action, 0% apr and low to no balance transfer fees. People can rack up what constitutes as a down payment on a house in no time

Good luck. Hopefully, this wakes him up and makes him realize the value of a dollar. We've all lost a good chunk of change in our lives. Just have to make sure the rest of his life is in balance.

gambling within your means and being able to take a loss and walk away rather than tilting are musts if you want to stay in the game or eventually it will catch up to you.

He probably needs some time away from gambling and feel the hurt so it won't happen to this extent again.

Sammy, it has to come through his change of heart. He needs to find something else to occupy his time and you can help him with that. Find something you use to do when he was young like fishing, golf, or whatever and do it together every week. Let him know that's it's okay to make mistakes, but to learn from them, recover and to teach others not to make the same mistakes. Good will come from this.

    Here's the deal Sam...

30+ ain't no kid. Time to quit babying the motherfukker. He clearly knows mom & daddy will be there to bail his ass out, which is the only reason he called your ass crying. Why on earth would a grown, married man tell his parents all of his financial situation?

I know you love him....but time to give this motherfukker some tough love. Get him off that tit. Fukk spending 75k for fukkin gambli rehab. That's fukkin laughable to me. Not like he's got a heroin addiction. Tell him to grow the fukk up and quit being such a selfish prick.

Encourage him to keep on gambling, that a hot streak is just around the corner and post his picks on here so we can fade.

You can talk about money management all you want but you really have to lose money to learn the discipline you need to have any success gambling.

When you do something, it should not affect your loved ones and others. And he is 30-years-old after all.

Yeah, at some point people are more willing to change behavior if they know they won't be bailed out.

You need to emphasize that he called you. That means he wants to do something about it. Gambling is very easy to get a hold of, if you are accountable to someone else. Make him accountable to you. Determine a SET amount of money that he can lose per week and hold him accountable to that amount. Hell it may need to be $100 but once that is set, he cannot deviate. He has to be accountable by showing you his inflow and outflow of money. All accounts, all pay stubs, all bills. Maybe start him off betting points here at SBR only until he can be trusted with real cash.

Sammy sorry to hear that. I worry about this type of thing coming back to bite me years down the road. I have always been open with my kids and wife about my gambling. I try to warn them about the dangers, but in the end they are going to do what they want to do.

5-10 years ago i was doing the same thing... grind away and then get drunk and piss away thousands in online or real casinos

i'd like to say it's only money but it can lead to depression/worse issues. if you need any help just ask, i've had some experiences in this

If he says he needs to pay the man on Tuesday, do NOT give him cash. You can decide if you want to go with him and pay it or work out a plan, but giving him access to money if you can't control it is bad news.

I think many of us have been in a similar situation at some point.

this is going to be painful for him in the short term but can actually be beneficial long term if he learns from his mistake.
