I think sharing stuff is the whole point of belonging to a forum regardless of the subject matter, no? People were rightly upset by this and came in to post their condolences and anger. Then a pic was released and more anger was released. Then I posted the info about how the wrong guy was ID'd and was actually alive and we went on to have a really great conversation about media, what we expect, what happened in China today as well, should kids be on tv, etc. Then all of us kept each other informed with whatever tidbits we could find from different media sources. Did any of us change the world in this thread? Of course not. But I know I have very few people in my real life that I could have a rational conversation with about a topic like this. And I sure wouldn't have the privilege of being forced to consider viewpoints outside of my own kneejerk and/or stubborn beliefs. It's power in numbers and friendship. Don't underestimate the reach and importance of social media Sammy because you never know who is reading these threads without posting... remember, this same organism is the one who fingered an innocent guy as a mass murderer today and had people wanting him hung in Times Square.

I know if I were a parent of any of the kids killed today in the US or China I would have wished my child's teacher had a gun. Or 8 of them. And this is one of many reasons why the cycle will continue.

I would dare suggest that the US is more hated than any other country just based on my experience. Lots of guns there and a big ol' defence force too. However terrorists still attacked on 9/11.

It's odd, in Israel where I lived for over 10 years about 50% of the population carries a firearm- either a personal licensed pistol or an army-issued submachine gun. Gun violence is almost unheard of, street crime is at a minimum & these insane mass shootings NEVER happen. Must be the difference in cultures......

That guy is right...It is definitely a different culture. Something has broken down and it has nothing to do with the accessibility of firearms. If that were the case then countries like Canada and other northern ones that do a lot of recreational hunting would having people firing rifles at each other when they got depressed or drunk or they found their wife cheating or whatever. I grew up with maybe 9 rifles hanging on racks in our pool table room and never did I or my friends think to grab one. Even as a teenager when I'd sneak friends in the house and we'd drink. The guns were a non-issue - just like another silly knick knack on the wall. Religious terrorists are one thing but these school shootings and everything else is a way different ball game.

We all get caught up in all the small stuff, but deep in, most know what really matters.

We just take it for granted, until something like this rocks our core.

And when it does happen, we pull up, and refocus our energy on what really matters most.

At least for a while.
