EP36's Phi Slamma Jamma Thread: '09-'10

What's up fellas. God do I love college hoops, probably my favorite sport and the one that I have done better at in the past two seasons than the others. Phi Slamma Jamma for those of you who haven't been on this earth for as many years as myself was the nickname the University of Houston gave itself during the glory years of Hakeem Olajuwon, Clyde Drexler & others. They dominated and that's what I want to do to the books this season. All constructive criticism is welcomed as well as your own thoughts to add on! Here's to achieving our goal boys ... making the "Big Dance" the one that we do around our piles of cash!

*All wagers are for one unit unless otherwise noted*

    MONDAY, NOVEMBER 9TH
    NORTH CAROLINA -30.5 (-105)
This should be an absolute blood bath as Roy Williams looks to establish this "new-look" Heels squad as the dominant one in college hoops from Day 1. It is appropriate to say UNC isn't rebuilding, they have reloaded and will be firing bullets. The Heels frontline should dominate with Ed Davis, Deon Thompson & Tyler Zeller highlighting that crew. And don't forget frosh John Henson who may get a chance to play some more minutes tonight when this gets out of control. In the backcourt, the Heels must replace Ty Lawson but should be okay with Larry Drew and freshmen Dexter Strickland on-duty plus Marcus Ginyard returning. Carolina played one exhibition against Belmont Abbey and won by 48 without breaking a sweat. The frontcourt combo of Davis, Thompson & Zeller had 53 points in that one. Isaiah Thomas' Florida International squad is without most of its best scoring options from last season from a 13-20 squad. He's brought in a lot of JUCOs, but is also heading into his coaching debut without an exhibition game under his belt, not wanting to play Carolina (he tried to bail on this game and get it changed) and with the health of his mother (heart attack) on his mind. The backcourt of the Heels may be the weak spot early on this season, but they shouldn't find much to trouble them here as their objective will be simply to get the ball inside to the bigs and let them do the damage. I think having the inexperienced backcourt may actually help as Roy Williams is unlikely to keep the foot off the pedal to get these guys used to live game action as quickly as possible. Anything less than total domination tonight by UNC would be shocking.

    THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 12TH
    [1ST HALF] JAMES MADISON/OHIO STATE OVER 65.5 (-110)
Ohio State had a huge debut to the season with a 100 point effort against Alcorn State this week, putting up a massive 56 point 1st half, allowing 28. James Madison makes their season debut with 3 returning starters. The 2008 Dukes' squad averaged 70.8 ppg and rained a crap-ton of 3 pointers in their exhibition game against Philly U, putting 16 in on 27 attempts. The Buckeyes also loved the 3-ball in their opener, hitting 14 of 33 from downtown. JMU figures to give the Buckeyes a bit more of a test tonight and so long as the pace remains a bit rag-tag in the beginning, getting to 66 points by the half shouldn't be a major problem. I see the Buckeyes getting close to 40 if not more, leaving James Madison to get 25-30 to get this done.

    JAMES MADISON/OHIO STATE OVER 141 (+100)

Maybe I'm an all-day sucker, but F the sportsbooks. They've pushed this number all over the board in the last hour, dropping it 6-6.5 points. If they are trying to keep people from wagering on totals by doing this, then so be it. Who in their right mind would bet on a total that dropped this much? ME. So rape me if you choose sportsbooks, I'm taking it to you. Ohio State is capable of 80 on any given night with the weapons they have and JMU has some talent to it. The Dukes should be good for anywhere from 60-68.

    FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 13TH
    MOREHEAD STATE/KENTUCKY 1st HALF OVER 63.5 (-110)
Morehead State is expected to be near the top in the Ohio Valley Conference again and has a dynamic hi-low duo in G Maze Stallworth and F Kenneth Faried who was second in the country in double-doubles last season. Patrick Patterson highlights the new-look Kentucky squad, bringing back his 17.9 ppg average along with low post wall Perry Stevenson. No John Wall tonight, but fellow frosh DeMarcus Cousins gets a chance to shine and Eric Bledsoe takes over the PG duties. I know the offense is a work in progress with Calipari here and without Wall, but something tells me Coach Cal is looking to make a statement tonight. Remember Morehead stuck with Lousiville in the 1st half of their NCAA tournament game last year before the Cardinals pulled away in the 2nd half. I'm looking for Kentucky to start fast & set the tone. If they do that, then I think the 1st half will surpass this number and I can get on the damn board for 2009-2010.

    FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 13TH
    SIENA -14 [Tennessee State] (-105)
The Saints should again run & gun their way toward a potential NCAA tourney appearance with four starters returning from last season's 27 win team. They should take a step toward win #1 with ease against Tennessee State whose top returning scorer averaged just over 10 ppg from a 12 win squad last season that had just 6 wins until a hot streak in February & March. Asking this inexperienced bunch to handle a veteran savvy squad like Siena should prove to be too much in the opener. Siena should control this for the most part from the opening tip to the final whistle blows.

Thought I was gonna get a bailout on that 1st half bet after it looked dead half-way through the half, then they decided to miss all four shots taken in the last minute and a half. 58 total. Confident that Siena can get me on the board. FADE me!

Solid shooting in the 1st half. May not continue, but FTs should help.

    New Mexico State +9 [St.Mary's] (-105)
I can only assume St.Mary's is getting this many points based on their name & past performance, but they have quite a task in front of them this season to replace PTP-ers Patrick Mills & Diamon Simpson. They'll be missing over 60% of their scoring from a year ago while New Mexico State, the WAC's top scoring club in 2008-2009, returns all five starters. Jonathan Gibson & Jahmar Young are ones to watch, forming a dynamic duo in the backcourt. Wendell McKines mans the frontcourt, averaging a double-double last season. The Aggies shot around 40% from distance last season behind the strokes of Gibson & Young. As St.Mary's looks to establish a new identity, the Aggies might not just keep this within the number, but steal an outright win.

    North Carolina -22.5 (-105)
Biting again with the Heels at home here against a Valpo squad that lost by 10 to Ball State. UNC looked dominant against A&T in their 2nd game and while a 40+ point win might not be in the books, 30 or so seems quite possible here if they go for the kill shot.

    MONDAY, NOVEMBER 16TH
    Penn/Villanova UNDER 146 (-105)
Both squads have one game under their belt that may tell a little about tonight. Penn struggled shooting the ball against Penn State, falling 70-55 to the Nittany Lions. The Quakers were just 5 of 23 beyond the arc. Villanova played solid D in whipping Farleigh-Dickinson, 84-61. The Wildcats limited their foe to 39.6% FG and just 3 of 14 beyond the arc. 'Nova did not shoot well themselves at just over 40%, but did can 21 FTs to help their final outcome. These Big 5 games in Philly can sprout some surprises from time-2-time, but there won't be anything surprising about Villanova winning tonight. Last season, Villanova spanked Penn 69-47. If Villanova can hold Penn around 60, could hit.

    [2nd Half] Virginia/S.Florida UNDER 68 (-115)
Seems like a carbon copy of the SMU-S.Florida game. That one had 67 2nd half points. S.Florida is shooting well, but not taking many shots. Virginia is shooting poorly. FTs likely decide yay or nay here. Maybe halves can do it for me since I blow on the full games.

    Colgate/UCONN OVER 132 (-110)
Giving it another whirl. UCONN was a bit lackluster in beating William & Mary 75-66 in their opener. They shot over 50%, but missed 9 FTs that could have made the game far less close. This is Colgate's debut, so they are a bit of a wildcard here. They are picked about mid-pack in the Patriot League with three double-digit scorers returning from last season. They were one of the worst offensive teams at 56.7 ppg, so UCONN will probably need to do the damage here. Expecting a more spirited Huskies' blowout tonight & if they can get to 80 points (magic # for me), I think Colgate can sneak out 50-some odd points!

    PLAY #11: UW-MILWAUKEE -1.5 (-105)
Milwaukee takes on Indiana State this afternoon. The Panthers played tough in a 4 point loss to Western Kentucky last time out. Indiana State was stifled by LSU, 56-45. The Sycamores shot just 30% from the floor. While they will not face as tough a defense in UW-Milwaukee, the Panthers have three starters back from a solid squad last season and they remain a tough foe with their three point attack. They had five players in double figures in their last game and their offense alone should be enough to get past a stingy ISU team in what could be a real ugly game.

    PLAY #12: ST.BONAVENTURE +5.5 (-105)
Other than being affiliated with a power conference, there seems to be little to like about St.John's. The Red Storm are once again picked to finish in the lower part of the Big East. They beat Long Island, 83-70 in their opener, simply beating an over-matched program. Now they take on A-10 squad St.Bonaventure, coming off a 15-15 campaign that helped infuse some life into a dormant program. The Bonnies have a solid trio of returnees - Andrew Nicholson in the low post. The sophomore had 17 & 7 in his season debut, a 10 point win over Cleveland State. Backcourt stud Jonathan had a team best 20 points in that opener and comes in as another returning double digit scorer along with Chris Matthews. The Bonnies got a great bench performance in the opener from Michael Davenport who had 20. They shot 61% and limited Cleveland State to 38% shooting. With St.John's not possessing top notch weapons, St.Bonventure should have a chance to keep this game close and maybe even steal it straight up.

Easy cash on the Duke 1st Half OVER, but Milwaukee is letting Indiana State score at-will. F-ing horrible defensive effort & their shooting is streaking downward tonight. Doubt they make it close down the stretch, so chalk it up and move on.

    PLAY #14: VCU -6 (-108)
It may have been a road game, but Western Michigan losing by 6 to Detroit signals that this MAC team will once again be hovering as a so-so team at best. They do have a great backcourt talent in David Kool and he alone can keep them in games. Tonight, they face Virginia Commonwealth who are favored by some to repeat again as Colonial champs. VCU shot well in rolling Bethune-Cookman and are adjusting to life without stud Eric Maynor who is now in the NBA. Larry Sanders is the returning leading scorer & Joe Rodriguez may be stepping into the role of scorer after hitting for 17 in the opener. Both teams can score, although I think VCU shoots better from long range. VCU's D should make the difference.

    PLAY #15: [2ND HALF] BUTLER/NORTHWESTERN UNDER 65 (-110)
Two jump shooting teams that play half court offense & tough half court defense. Not many FTs if they keep with the jumpers. If the D holds up, then the score should remain fairly low. 30-24 Butler leads at half.

Pretty much my luck so far. Butler is fouling like nobody's business in the last four minutes when they are up by double digits. Still have a shot in hell & Northwestern cans a 3 with 0:18 left and it ends up with 67 points.

    PLAY #16: [2nd Half] NEVADA/UNLV OVER 76 (-115)
Poor shooting from both in the 1st half, but free throws and threes by Nevada kept the point total relatively high. 22 team fouls. If the game remains that tightly officiated/foul prone, FTs could make the difference in the 2nd half. 24 points in the 1st 10 minutes. 47 in the 2nd 10. We'll see which one was more true.
