I just wrote a detailed post on how the two are completely different animals. I deleted it because it's a lesson I just don't want to teach right now.

The short version...fantasy is a joke and all those who play with the goal of winning money should be mocked, even if they win consistently.

Those who play for fun have been manipulated out of what's relevant to win at sports betting. Which is just as well, they aren't winning at either.

It's only a joke because the juice is 2 to 3 times as much as Sportsbooks. The brightside of that is there are more casual players which means the "lines"(for lack of a better term) or competition is likely not as sharp as Sportsbooks in most cases. If Fantasy Sports had competitive juice it would be as legit as any Sportsbook. I don't see how you can mock anyone that wins consistently. If they are smart enough to win consistently I'm sure they are well aware of offshore Sportsbooks as well.

I don't mock them for winning or even winning consistently.

I mock them because they won't know why they are doing it and if they are lucky enough to keep doing it the liquidity is even worse. The phrase smart enough to keep winning is a bit of a joke in reality.

It's a mistake to think that the casual and rec players in the market of fantasy make the competition less sharp. Those players don't have an effect on the competition, unless you play for fractions of dollars.

Which is point number 2, even winning fantasy players may not know what they are playing against, yet still pay a ridiculous commission.

It's a fixed system where, in the end (longer term) profit and loss have nothing to do with an athlete's performance.

But don't tell a fantasy player that, especially a winning player, even one with a "successful" model.

Fantasy and sports betting are two entirely different things. That’s like saying the poker tables at the casino will suffer because sports betting is legal.

They are both gambling/betting.

Although I've played it since very young & well before DFS sites came along, I've always looked at Fantasy Sports as the minor leagues of sports betting.

In my opinion most play it because:

1. It's Legal

2. They've never been introduced to sports betting

Once you start betting real games, it's like graduating to the big leagues.

I've debated with many Fantasy supporters over the years about whether the hobby/business would survive if we ever saw legalization.

They claim there will alwaya be a market for fantasy players.

That may be true, but my argument has been that those numbers will dwindle in time as players now legally get a taste of of what real betting looks & feels like.

I've always enjoyed both, completely different things that both bring different levels of interest to the games to me.

Would they basically post a game line or a total where player A can come in and select Team A -5.5, but he has to wait for someone else to come in and select Team B +5.5 for the bet to be set in place? Or will Draft Kings operate like an actual sportsbook?

Just seems i lost interest in Fantasy years ago for some reason.

I go thru phases. Sometimes I get into it for stretches and actually enjoy playing daily dfs contest more than betting NFL games. Other times completely disinterested.

I have 1 redraft season long I been playing w lifelong friends for bout a decade now, that only live draft still do every year and absolutely love that league (as often happens life has made it to where this only real interaction some of us still have on regular basis w each other). It one of my favorite days of the year!! Plus we have a incredibly active, hostile, hilariously brutal message board that keeps everyone engaged throughout the year!! Buy in not even much but not really the point. Some years I find few soft groups w better payouts and get in just to try and pick up some cash, just depends how much time/work I feel like putting into it any given year...

Indeed they are. DraftKings has held the necessary licence from the UK Gambling Commission for some time for 'Pool Betting' to operate fantasy sports competitions within its jurisdiction. However, despite its being perfectly able to have applied for a remote betting licence to offer general sports betting it did not do so.
