Over the past month, the price of bitcoin has consistently maintained its upward trend and momentum, increasing from around $1,185 to $1,624 as litecoin moves to implement SegWit. In the past seven days, bitcoin price recorded a 15 percent weekly gain, breaking the $1700 barrier on May 9 for the very first time. The short and mid-term surge of the bitcoin price coincides with the successful activation of the Bitcoin Core’s development team’s transaction malleability fix and scaling solution Segregated Witness (SegWit) on litecoin. Specifically, Charlie Lee revealed on April 12 that litecoin reached its 75 percent threshold for activation. After the initial approval, litecoin implemented SegWit upon the completion of its two-week lock in period.
In the monthly bitcoin price chart provided by various bitcoin market data providers including Cryptowatch, BTC-USD really began to surge when the 75 percent threshold for SegWit activation on litecoin was met.

Only for litecoin, currently. My understanding is this serves as an unofficial testnet for bitcoin.

How long did it take the book to process your payout? 1800 to 1650 is obviously a very significant decrease.

Sorry, just saw the post. If lightening is implemented, it should give LTC a big boost. It will also help Bitcoin since BTC will follow with SegWit and Lightening.

It's like if you owned a zoo that was 90% empty, with no lines to wait in and free admission, announcing that you'd just purchased a new, even bigger zoo that'll be 95% empty, also with no lines and free admission, and the market screaming, "Awesome Idea!"

Solid point, but I think the true motivation for all the alt coins racing to adopt SegWit is because for reasons passing understanding, the market goes nuts for it. EMC2 is up 150% the last 4 days because it's on the verge of adopting SegWit, to solve a scaling problem it most certainly does not have. (Otherwise, the alts probably wouldn't want to help BTC, their biggest competitor, "test drive" its scaling solution.)

Heh, don't get me wrong. I'm thrilled by this market misbehavior. Making money in alt coins is currently so easy you can sum it up in one sentence: join every slack chat, where you'll hear about SegWit developments 24 hours-ish early, buy ANY coin about to make a SegWit announcement, sell it 2 days later, pocket huge profits.

Good analogy. Lightning is the next thing to cause the huge price increases. It already did with Syscoin.

According to Guy Corem ex Spondoolies CEO there was a meeting in NY that Barry Silbert arranged and an agreement was made, it will be published in the morning NY time.(self.Bitcoin)submitted 5 hours ago * by 88OOAK
Quoting all his messages from the post:
++ "a hydrogen bomb is coming"

++ "I wasn't expecting this to be the result" (of the whole HF/Segwit saga).
++ An answer to the question "is there an agreement?" he replied "it's quite on sided hence the use of hydrogen bomb".
++ "it's coming, he just emailed good to go" (probably quoting a message he received).
++ "to my defense I would say that we are witnessing an historic event".
++ answering the question "is there a time frame ? " (for the news to be published) he said "how much can I nag him, eventually he will block me " (referring to his source).
++ "don't be mad. he (the source) is going back to every one who signed the original agreement and checking if they agree to the version agreed at the meeting".
++ "will probably publish first thing in the AM in NY" (quoting his source).
++ "I thought he will publish according to those attended the actual meeting and then add the rest (whoever agrees)" (talking about the actions of his source).
++ "there is a convention in NY in that convention there was a meeting arranged by Barry Silbert. they reached agreement. tomorrow morning NY time it will be published".
edit: some picture I capture for proof it's in Hebrew but there is one part I quoted in English.

If a compromise is reached along the lines of Raiders' posts, Bitcoin will jump, both in the immediate term and in the short to mid term, God only knows how high.

For margin trading, I use the Walmart Rule: I trade only in cash, when I can. Tonight, I'm taking the rare step of expanding my BTC holdings using margin.

Email received from Bitstamp Sunday afternoon:

    Dear ,

We hope you've had a good weekend! Ours has been busy spent putting the finishing touches to the next phase in our development, so we have a lot to tell you.

First up, we will be launching a new landing page on Monday, so do not be alarmed! No, there is no need to adjust your monitor and, yes, we do hope you like the new look! We think it ties in well with our #followtheline social media campaign. Find out more here.

Our other exciting announcements will be made tomorrow, but we promise you it will be worth the short wait!

$100 in bitcoin in 2010 now worth almost $73 million.

Just a thought of that makes me shiver.

Is that right. That means that one coin was about .003. Less than 1/3 of a penny.
