    Opie I agree 100%

But then we'd be charged with second degree manslaughter of an endangered species. I carry my desert eagle to the zoo on every trip and just put it in the bottom of my little girls stroller.

    We live in wonderful times

what do you do with a dead gorilla. bury it, burn it, donate it for scientific study. they should shoot the rest of them. everyone i have ever known or seen have managed just fine without a gorilla in their midst.

The sweet 400 lb gorilla was holding the kid's hand when he got shot dead in his own house. He was parenting better than the 400 lb biological mother. Why the hell do people have to be screaming and yelling to make the situation worse. Why didn't zoo officials make observers leave, what if the kid got shot instead? What if the dead gorilla landed on the kid? RIP Harambe, you deserved much better and had much more intelligence than that entire family combined.

The actual main difference is that I would've never neglected my kid to the point that they had enough time to scale a fence, go thru 7 ft of dense hedge, and then fall 15 ft into a moat. Also, my child has both parents in the picture, so there would've been even more supervision.
Come on Opie, kids get away from parents all the time. That does not make them bad parents. Stop the nonsense. A kid is a kid is a kid. They're going to do stupid shit because they don't know any better. They see a gorilla they're going to want to go pet it. The fukking zoo is fukking negligent having an exhibit that kids can crawl into. It's a damn zoo for Christ sake. Families with snotty nose brats are going to visit. You have to kid and idiot proof that shit.

and you would be an idiot to jump in after the kid. The moment you did that the Gorilla would have sensed the panic and would have done something Gorillas do, like break your neck or throw the baby against a wall. The best thing was that it was a baby that stayed calm. Any other kid and they would have been screaming, hollering and trying to hit the Gorilla. That kid was a natural born G. Leave it to you to jump in as a dumb parent and get both of you killed.

Do you know how many kids go missing at Disney World every day? Try hundreds, I use to work there. Mom turns her back, kid is gone. Disney workers are trained to spot missing children. It's a park, kids are going to wonder off. Disney is idiot proof to save people from themselves. You can rest assured at Disney that they will find your child. Don't try it at 6 flags.

His own house? He was caged in a fukking zoo. He was most likely separated from his family years ago and confined to a small area to be a side show for people's entertainment. The zoo owners were too cheap to build a secure cage where a little kid visiting with his family who bought a ticket to the carnival, got in and you blame the family? Where's the outrage over these zoos that make money off the backs of these animals, treating them like shit? The only difference here is the Gorilla was named Harambe and not Kunta Kinte.

The most amazing thing in this thread was finding out Brick James still reads a newspaper.

Finding out Opie would have wrestled the gorilla isn't surprising at all. I'm sure afterwards he would've set up a hoop directly above the gorillas head, and slam dunked in that motherfukkers face.

They do, but mostly relegated to the conjugal variety. The ape and the keeper use each other for after hours "monkey business" but there's no reasoning with Mighty Joe Young once he's happened upon a human Fleshlight that's tumbled into his living quarters.

i agree the poor gorilla shouldn't be there in the first place. Close down the zoo if animals can't be better protected than that! But yes I blame the stupid parent, kid had to go through an obstacle course to get in with the gorilla, and witnesses said the kid was telling his mom he was going in and the mom said, "no you're not". At that point the mom should have taken the threat seriously and held the kid instead of taking pictures, especially a 3 year old. This isn't some BS accidents happen, it was bad parenting. The zoo is not a substitute babysitter, put a f'n harness on the kid if he isn't going to listen.

Facebook post from a gorilla handler.

I am going to try to clear up a few things that have been weighing on me about Harambe and the Cinci Zoo since I read the news this afternoon.

I have worked with Gorillas as a zookeeper while in my twenties (before children) and they are my favorite animal (out of dozens) that I have ever worked closely with. I am gonna go ahead and list a few facts, thoughts and opinions for those of you that aren't familiar with the species itself, or how a zoo operates in emergency situations.

Now Gorillas are considered 'gentle giants' at least when compared with their more aggressive cousins the chimpanzee, but a 400+ pound male in his prime is as strong as roughly 10 adult humans. What can you bench press? OK, now multiply that number by ten. An adult male silverback gorilla has one job, to protect his group. He does this by bluffing or intimidating anything that he feels threatened by.

Gorillas are considered a Class 1 mammal, the most dangerous class of mammals in the animal kingdom, again, merely due to their size and strength. They are grouped in with other apes, tigers, lions, bears, etc.

While working in an AZA accredited zoo with Apes, keepers DO NOT work in contact with them. Meaning they do NOT go in with these animals. There is always a welded mesh barrier between the animal and the humans.

In more recent decades, zoos have begun to redesign enclosures, removing all obvious caging and attempting to create a seamless view of the animals for the visitor to enjoy watching animals in a more natural looking habitat. *this is great until little children begin falling into exhibits* which of course can happen to anyone, especially in a crowded zoo-like setting.

I have watched this video over again, and with the silverback's posturing, and tight lips, it's pretty much the stuff of any keeper's nightmares, and I have had MANY while working with them. This job is not for the complacent. Gorillas are kind, curious, and sometimes silly, but they are also very large, very strong animals. I always brought my OCD to work with me. checking and rechecking locks to make sure the animals under my care and I remained separated before entering to clean.

I keep hearing that the Gorilla was trying to protect the boy. I do not find this to be true. Harambe reaches for the boys hands and arms, but only to position the child better for his own displaying purposes.

Males do very elaborate displays when highly agitated, slamming and dragging things about. Typically they would drag large branches, barrels and heavy weighted balls around to make as much noise as possible. Not in an effort to hurt anyone or anything (usually) but just to intimidate. It was clear to me that he was reacting to the screams coming from the gathering crowd.
Harambe was most likely not going to separate himself from that child without seriously hurting him first (again due to mere size and strength, not malicious intent) Why didn't they use treats? well, they attempted to call them off exhibit (which animals hate), the females in the group came in, but Harambe did not. What better treat for a captive animal than a real live kid!

They didn't use Tranquilizers for a few reasons, A. Harambe would've taken too long to become immobilized, and could have really injured the child in the process as the drugs used may not work quickly enough depending on the stress of the situation and the dose B. Harambe would've have drowned in the moat if immobilized in the water, and possibly fallen on the boy trapping him and drowning him as well.

Many zoos have the protocol to call on their expertly trained dart team in the event of an animal escape or in the event that a human is trapped with a dangerous animal. They will evaluate the scene as quickly and as safely as possible, and will make the most informed decision as how they will handle the animal.

I can't point fingers at anyone in this situation, but we need to really evaluate the safety of the animal enclosures from the visitor side. Not impeding that view is a tough one, but there should be no way that someone can find themselves inside of an animal's exhibit.

I know one thing for sure, those keepers lost a beautiful, and I mean gorgeous silverback and friend. I feel their loss with them this week. As educators and conservators of endangered species, all we can do is shine a light on the beauty and majesty of these animals in hopes to spark a love and a need to keep them from vanishing from our planet. Child killers, they are not. It's unfortunate for the conservation of the species, and the loss of revenue a beautiful zoo such as Cinci will lose. tragedy all around.

*me working (very carefully) with a 400+ pound silverback circa 2009

Very vivid imagination, that gorilla would rip your penis off like a celery stalk and throw it in the tall grass somewhere. Their strength is beyond your comprehension. I know youre joking though, funny guy.

As a parent, the last thing I would think is possible is for my child to be able to get in a Gorilla pit. That's not a child or parent problem, that's a zoo problem. If a kid can get in that tells me that animals inside can get out, like a baby gorilla. The zoo is totally negligent and would lose a lawsuit in a minute. Kids do stupid stuff, parents also do stupid stuff. When stupid people come to the zoo it's up to the zoo to protect them from themselves. Some people are like Opie... I can go a few rounds with that ape. He don't look so tough.

Same exact shit happened in Chicago like 20 years ago and the gorilla didn't get shot and the kid survived and was fine. 3 year old kid got loose from negligent mother and fell into the moat. Gorilla swooped down and snatched him up. All the ignorant onlookers screaming the whole time and the overzealous militant mindset our country has devolved to over the past decades did him in. The solution to problems in this country is shoot it first, ask questions later. Cops shoot unarmed teens in the back, zookeepers shoot endangered species. Consequences of the same ghetto, combative mindset.

I'm under the opinion that everyone is wrong in this situation. The kid is wrong for being so stupid or naive. The mother is wrong for being negligent, especially after hearing the comments by witnesses saying the kid threatened to jump several times prior to actually doing it. The zoo is wrong for not taking safety seriously and building an exhibit that can't be easily breached. Finally the person who shot the gorilla, the zoo guard or cop or whoever it was, was incorrect.

That's one of the most abhorrent displays of hypocrisy that I've seen in this country since I've been alive. They basically imprison animals that are endangered and repopulate them using everyone's tax dollars and donations but then bust a cap in said animals before the process is complete. Nothing was accomplished by having that gorilla in the zoo. Wasted everyone's money, the gorilla's life and didn't even accomplish the goal which was to breed the endangered species and repopulate it. Who cares though really, cause nothing can be done about it now. It's always easy to play armchair QB. Bottom line is this could've been prevented if either the mother or zoo were more prudent. Complacency kills and this is just another example of that.

    .

Huh? How the hell are you going to call a 3 year old wrong for doing what 4 year olds do? A 3 year old is going to try stupid shit because they are 3 years old. Good grief, I can only assume that you've never had a 3 year old? A 3 year old will try to put their tongue in a light socket, they'll run into the deep end of the pool, they'll grab a rattlesnake by the tail, they'll try to brush the teeth of a mountain lion. Damn, stop blaming the child.

and stop blaming the mother. Hell, she's at a damn zoo. If the kid told you he was jumping in a gorilla cage, you would have laughed at him like a fool because you know there's no way he's getting in there. You'd probably be on your iphone or taking pictures of other monkeys doing stupid chit or trying to look up skirts of neighboring MILFS. You would be as shocked as she was when you saw him in that cage.

Only the zoo is wrong. Youre calling a 4 yr old child stupid, give me a break, its a 4 yr old who like most 4 yr olds are led by the wind, parents not stupid either. Ive taken my child to many different zoos and although he was close by all the time, the last thing on my mind was him coming into contact with a wild animal. If the school had a field trip there would be tons of kids roaming around with not many teachers the last thing on anybody's mind is it being possible for a child to be able to come in contact with a wild animal like a gorilla. Should be impossible for an an adult let alone a child. Thats bad zoo security, they should do whatever they can to get through this, then take proper measures for securing the public from things like this, and then try and build their reputation back so other parents will want to bring their kids to that zoo.

I found a rough side sketch, but I'm sure someone out there has taken a photo of the fence
If a 3 year old can get in... a 400 lb Ape can get out. That zoo should be shut down.

Millions of people have visited that zoo, and only 1 person has ever fallen into the gorilla pit. Yet some of you will sit here and seriously defend the mom or the zoo like none of them were negligent and it's just something that happens. Smdh. I've said it before and I'll say it again, everyone involved in this situation was wrong. You guys on this forum with children aren't that naive to let that happen to your own kids. If it was your kid you would've done everything you could've to protect him. Grabbed his hand, dove and snatched him up if you saw him breaching the fence etc. Let's just all be glad that the kid is okay. It's bad enough the gorilla is dead, would've been a lot worse if the kid was seriously injured also, but I heard he's fine which is the best possible outcome. Ali just died RIP greatest.
