How can this not be the worst signing of the 21st century?

Devils sign Kovalchuk to 7 year $60m deal.

    Wow

He is the worst player on the ice every shift.

Kings have 7 goals and his +\- is -6....

Google Chris Drury, Bobby Holik, and about every other Rangers signing under Glen Sather.

Apparently he's been playing "hurt" since the Florida series. You can tell by the way he's skating out there (if you wanna call it that) that he's obviously in some sort of pain, but he's been down right awful in the finals.

This is true. TS must just be upset with the bet he laid on the Devils.

He is too passive and tries to pass it off more when he should just let it rip.....especially on the powerplay

Hes like the opposite of a ballhog, too much passing

Even still, he's a big reason why the Devils even won the East.....He played awesome especially against Philly

Perhaps best signing of the 21st century was the following:

SBR John signs jjgold (aka Mario Dolbin at the time) to a 15 year, $360,000 deal

That's a good one but hard to argue with this:

On September 12, 2006, DiPietro signed a 15-year, $67.5 million contract with the Islanders.

Adrei Kirilenko (utah jazz) got a 6 year, $86 million deal.

he sucks. making 17million in 2011 was just awful.

Kovalchuk is signed to a 15 year $100M deal....so it's actually much worse than you thought.

I second that DiPietro's contract is the worst in NHL. He's played (terribly) in 47 games in the last 4 years combined.

Google Luongo, lawwwl. Signed to a 12 year contract when he was 33 or something - major fail!! I'm not a devils fan and I predicted a 4-0 LA win in this series, but I woudldn't be too worried about kovie, surely he is injured right now and just not saying anything about it. I know he keeps saying he's not, but that's just the typical bs where they try not to give the other team a boost by disclosing injuries

You need a better understanding of the CBA. It'll explain that signing.

This is by far the worst contract ever. He has only played 172 games over the first 6 seasons of his contract including just 47 games in the last 4 years

9 years left and it's pretty clear at this point Dipietro will not be a starting goaltender again in the NHL. Too injury prone and just terrible now.

BAUS is dead on the money with Vernon Wells. Angels keep throwing him out there because they feel obligated....embarassing!
Mets really screwed up with the Bonilla signing in the 90's....still paying the man millions each year to this day.

A lot worse this century ...

    • Alexei Yashin, New York Islanders Contract: 10 years, $87.5 million (maybe the worst in NHL history)
    • DiPietro signed a 15-year, $67.5 million contract with the Islanders
    • Scott Gomez, Montreal: $7.4 million per season
    • Wade Redden, New York Rangers Contract: Six years, $39 million
    • Sundin had signed a one-year, $8.6 million contract with Vancouver
    • Brian Campbell 58 million over eight years

Campbell signing doesn't matter you know why!? Cuz they won the cup that year they signed him or the year after (for Chicago not Florida)

Not sure how you throw DiPietro in the same group with players who not only played full seasons but one who actually won a Stanley Cup with his team and was a key component. List needs work, pal. Heck, I'd throw Jeff Finger's contract on there ahead of Sundin's, Gomez's, Campbell's, and Redden's.

OP is a complete idiot. Kovalchuk has clearly been hurt for most of the playoffs. The report is that he has a herniated disc which seems legit because of how stiffly he has been skating.

Mathy you fuckin idiot, did you watch a single Devils game in the regular season? When Kovalchuk is at full strength the contract looks about average, neither great nor awful. People like you who know nothing about hockey need to not post about it. The fact that you use a statistic as flawed as +/- to make any argument shows how clueless you are about the sport.

When the worst possible +/- he could've possibly had is -7 and his is -6, it means something.

The way he is playing he shouldn't even be on the ice. Terrified of contact, can't skate, and hasn't made any plays. In fact all I've seen him do is get caught making risky passes through his defensive end. He made a particularly horrible one in game3.
