There are giant corporations and politicians from both parties on either side of this one. Should be interesting.

It's not a waiting game, it's a game of poker. Lamar Smith has a royal flush and few people know it.
SOPA may pass. It may not. He doesn't care, and it doesn't matter. The MPAA and RIAA started working on their legislative strategy to pass a new anti-piracy bill in late 2010. SOPA was designed to raise the noise. Everyone is playing right into the entertainment industries hand. The lobbyists are laughing manically at the ignorance of the mob. Even Wikipedia and reddit have played into it.
What people don't know about is the ace: H.R.1981, the Protecting Children From Internet Pornographers Act of 2011 which is lying in wait. It's not complete. You see, PCIP is not contestable because it's about protecting children. They can, and very well might, copy and paste the full text of SOPA to the end of PCIP. That's the backup. That's the deal that was struck with entertainment industry lobbyists. We will try to push this anti-piracy bill. It probably won't work. Don't worry, we can pass it under an anti-child pornography bill.
There are two things which no Congressman will risk supporting: terrorism and child pornography. There can be no opposition, no discussion. Any anti-piracy law can ALWAYS be reframed as an anti-child pornography bill and it will pass, without even discussion. It will have the full support of the House (minus Ron Paul), the full support of the Senate, and most importantly the full support of the American people. NO ONE wants to risk being called a pedophile.
The entertainment industry has finally caught up with technology. They understand how it works. It took them 15 years, but they know what DNS is. They are going to exploit a fundamental problem with the way DNS is centralized and there is nothing that can be done to stop it. They have found an error in the very architecture of the Internet. The solution, from a free speech standpoint is not to fight it politically. The solution is the fix the error.
We must move to a decentralized system of DNS. It is not impossible. It requires some new thinking and a re-architecture of some web services, but it must be done if we want the Internet, as we know it today, to exist in 5 or 10 years.

Dozer - In a way... are they doing this to trace the population? (I'm sure they have already been doing it.) But point is... could they block even gambling websites? Or is this for only search engine purposes? I wonder if this would get out of hand???

    Man our govt sucks.

In the big picture, yes, IMO it's about control. All the uprisings around the world are made possible by social media and the internet. That includes occupy. They write it off as crazy kids using the internet but they are the ones who use different news sources vs seniors who tend to only use TV. None of that happens without the internet. The news networks share ownership interests with the businesses they are reporting about. There used to be about 60 networks and now there is 5 or 6. But I think these specific bills are about money. The lobbyists paid about 100 million to the sponsors. The same lobbyists hire the legislators after their public service is finished. They end up with jobs as advisers or heads. I guess the name for using public office as a stepping stone is the revolving door.

The interesting thing about now, is the internet is already flexing its muscle. These sponsors are facing a real threat of getting voted out of office by the public and showing others they have to be more careful who they piss off...unless they can censor the internet.

Yea, gambling sites would be blocked by ISPs. If they go the DNS route, you'd have to use an IP address or a software download to access a site instead of a url name. This would apply if you live in Canada or just wanted to access a site for research purposes.

Northwest Pharmacy out of British Columbia. There are others. I scanned them the prescriptions, and they send me the goods, usually out of Germany or India. No narcotics for me, I have heart disease, but it is a joke that I pay $200 less getting my drugs shipped in from all over the world than I would pay getting them from the pharmacy right outside my window. I have health insurance, too, which doesn't help with the Canadian hookup.

The ISP stuff wouldn't go into effect for at least a year after it's passed. The large books have enough diverse business that they can be fine but they wouldn't lose all US business. 5Dimes for example has more non-US business than others have in total business. Some of the large books like Bookmaker and BetOnline have download versions.

this is going too far. my ladyfriend with whom i share a paid megavideo subscription just renewed her 6-month subscription 2 days ago. yesterday megavideo/megaupload gets shut down by the FBI.

today apparently wikipedia is on strike protesting. yesterday a hacker group called anonymous shut down the FBI website in protest.

we're going to have to take to the streets like the Eqyptians and Libyans pretty soon.

and this is BEFORE these bills even pass.

The danger of bills like this passing are the way they are introduced. Often they are added on as part of another bill, as riders. This is how the Congress passes unpopular legislation and forces the President to sign the bill. Many Presidents have asked for a "line item veto", yet the Congress refuses to give the Presidency this power. To do so would weaken the Congress. This applies to both Republican and Democratic Presidents. Obama will be powerless to do anything about this bill if it is tacked on as a rider to another bill.
