Shohei Ohtani is the first player since Babe Ruth in 1919 with 50 IP and 15 HR in a single season.

    impressive

about 5-10 dudes could have done it if their managers would have let them play the field a bit too. few obvious ones off the top of my head, I know Mike Hampton and Carlos Zambrano both had 6-7 HR's in a season with very limited ab's in the last decade. Rick Ankiel, Michael Lorenzen

11:13am: The Indians have announced the move. Donaldson will begin a rehab stint with Triple-A Columbus on Monday.
10:35am: The Indians are planning to place just-acquired third baseman Josh Donaldson on the 10-day disabled list, per Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic. The move, which is retroactive to Sept. 1, will enable the injured Donaldson to go on a rehab assignment as he continues working his way back from a strained calf.
Cleveland landed Donaldson in a trade with Toronto last week, though the Tribe knew then that it was unclear when Donaldson would be able to make an impact at the major league level. Donaldson’s calf injury has kept him off a big league diamond since the end of May, and as Rosenthal notes, he has only played 11 minor league innings over the past three months. Nevertheless, the Indians were confident enough in Donaldson’s health to take a gamble on the former MVP at the waiver trade deadline.
The Indians are paying Donaldson just $1.3MM of his remaining $4MM salary. Aside from that money, adding Donaldson will only cost the Indians a player to be named later, albeit one “with some value,” as Shi Davidi of Sportsnet reported at the time of the deal. The hope for Cleveland is that it’ll catch lightning in a bottle with Donaldson, who was an elite player from 2013-17, as it heads toward the playoffs.
Assuming Donaldson does return to the majors this year, he’ll bump AL MVP candidate Jose Ramirez from third to second, thus sending second baseman Jason Kipnis to the outfield. In the process, Donaldson will try to rebuild some of his stock as he nears a trip to free agency in the offseason, when he won’t be saddled with a qualifying offer.

Former NL MVP Ryan Howard officially announced his retirement today, although he last played in the majors in 2016. Howard became a lightning-rod for criticism after the Phillies signed him to an ill-advised long-term extension that didn't work out, but he had a remarkable run from 2006 to 2009 when he averaged 50 home runs and 143 RBIs per season on those great Phillies teams. Not bad for a fifth-round from Missouri State.

Twins slugger Miguel Sano had to be carted off the field Tuesday after suffering an apparent left leg injury upon sliding into second base (video link via MLB.com). That’s the same leg that caused Sano to miss the final few weeks of the 2017 season — an injury that ultimately led to surgery to insert a titanium rod into his shin. Initial x-rays on the injury were negative, according to the team, and Sano has been diagnosed with a bruised lower leg, although there figure to be further evaluations and updates after the game. Whether lingering effect from that offseason procedure have impacted Sano isn’t clear, but the 2018 campaign has been a nightmare for the former top prospect. A year after hitting .264/.352/.507 with 28 homers in 483 plate appearances, Sano has struggled to a dismal .202/.285/.405 slash with a 37.6 percent strikeout rate.
More news out of the AL Central…

    • White Sox first baseman Jose Abreu told reporters today that the surgery he underwent two weeks ago was to repair a testicular torsion, as Daryl Van-Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times writes. The issue “blindsided” Abreu and prompted emergency surgery, but the 31-year-old Abreu thankfully revealed that he is in good health and possibly even nearing a return to the playing field. Abreu expressed optimism about being able to play in a game this weekend, though Van Schouwen notes that both manager Rick Renteria and GM Rick Hahn offered a more cautious timetable and said Abreu could miss another week or so. For now, Abreu is doing light cardio exercises as he works his way back.
    • The Royals announced tonight that left-hander Danny Duffy exited tonight’s start with a shoulder impingement and shoulder tightness. Further details haven’t yet been made available, but Duffy already missed 10 days last month due to an impingement in his left shoulder, making continued symptoms all the more troubling. The 28-year-old lefty lasted just two-thirds of an inning and saw was charged with three runs, causing his ERA to balloon to 4.88 on the year. Center fielder Brett Phillips, meanwhile, was announced as day-to-day with a shoulder contusion after crashing into the outfield wall at top speed.

On Aug. 29, the Red Sox became the first team since the 2013 Rangers to score 11 runs in an inning in which they had a sacrifice bunt (Andrew Benintendi). The Rangers’ sacrifice bunt that day was by Ian Kinsler. He had two hits in the Red Sox’s 11-run inning.

Tommy John surgery has been “recommended” for Angels starter/DH Shohei Ohtani after an MRI revealed additional damage to his ulnar collateral ligament, the club announced (h/t Jeff Fletcher of the Southern California News Group, on Twitter). It is not yet certain whether he will undergo the surgery, but it certainly sounds as if that will be the case.
Ohtani, 24, has amply justified the hype that formed when it became clear he’d be coming to the majors in advance of the 2018 season. Though some questions formed during his showing in Spring Training, Ohtani has been outstanding both on the mound and at the plate.
While Ohtani has continued to knock the cover off the ball since being diagnosed with a second-degree UCL sprain earlier this year, that development led to obvious concern as to his outlook as a pitcher. He was able to make it back for one outing, showing his typical upper-nineties heat before suddenly dropping off in the third inning.
Whether or not the additional UCL damage occurred during the outing, the fact is that Ohtani will almost certainly miss the entirety of the 2019 season — as a pitcher, that is. Typically, position players are able to return from this particular injury on a much shorter timeline.
It’s important to bear in mind here just why Ohtani was put back on the hill late in a season in which the club was already out of contention. Having received platelet-rich plasma and stem cell treatment, and completed a course of rest and rehabilitation, Ohtani was deemed ready to test the ligament. Had Ohtani instead waited until next spring to take the bump, only then to find that it could not withstand full-throttle pitching, then the recovery timeline would have prevented him from hitting for much or all of the 2019 season and perhaps forced his pitching rehab to push into the 2020 campaign.
The good news for the Angels here is that they are still playing with house money so far as Ohtani is concerned. Because he chose to cross the Pacific before he was eligible to sign outside of the existing MLB international spending caps, he has been limited to a relatively meager signing bonus and the MLB minimum salary. The organization still possesses five full seasons of control beyond the present one.
Still, it’s another hugely disappointing injury for an organization that has had more than its fair share of late. Having already dealt with numerous pitching injuries in recent seasons, this year’s Halos roster went without players such as Zack Cozart, Garrett Richards, and Matt Shoemaker for long stretches. While Shoemaker is now back on track to be a factor in 2019, Richards will hit the open market after succumbing to TJS this summer. The Angels’ front office will face a difficult task in putting together a competitive rotation.
Looking ahead for Ohtani, the news will no doubt re-spark the debate as to whether he would be able to perform as both a pitcher and a hitter at the game’s highest level. Some may now wonder whether that effort will be shelved. But it’s frankly hard to imagine either player or team desiring to cut short what has thus far been an unbelievably successful attempt. In his first attempt at the major leagues, Ohtani has turned in 274 plate appearances of .276/.355/.547 hitting, with 16 home runs and six steals, along with 51 2/3 innings of 3.31 ERA pitching, supported by 11.0 K/9 against 3.8 BB/9.
If anything, perhaps, Ohtani and the Halos will need to assess just how to allow him to perform with the bat in 2018 without jeopardizing his throwing rehab. With nearly six months to go before camp opens, there’s plenty of time for a plan to be mapped out. Though we’ll all be robbed of a chance to see Ohtani’s amazing two-way spectacle for the time being, there’s still reason to hope he’ll be able to resume the grand experiment in 2020.
