    Filippo Volandri vs Teimuraz Gabashvili

Does anybody know why Volandri is +5 for todays matchup? He has won the previous 3 meetings. I noticed he retired in his last match on the 06/10 but cannot find out why. Any input would be greatly appreciated

Volandri is 2-10 on indoor surface. He only wins on clay.

A russian playing a russian is another factor...neutral court this price is not so steep for gabashvili, and on clay, say in Italy, volandri would probably even be favored.

Volandri has been in the ATP for over 10 years - he's only played 12 matches on this surface in that entire time and lost 10 of them.

Last match for Volandri on a surface other than clay was at this exact tournament - 2 years ago. He lost.

He pulled out of his last match with a right forearm injury on Oct 10. Not sure what the status is with that but still another bad sign.

Long story short - he's 99% here for the check and considering he's playing a Russian at home and both of these guys have been suspected of fixing a match or two in the past, Gabashvili is a somewhat safe bet. Horrible odds though on a player like Gabashvili who has been known to play with cement blocks on his feet and rocks in his head from time to time.

Be very wary - these guys are both fixers.

Edited - the matched betting on BetFair seems to still be pointing to a Gabashvili win. Just might be in 3 sets.

Gabashvili 1.20 on betfair when a set down, pretty obvious what's coming.

dont worry, gaba will win in 3 sets, this is how the script goes...give pippo first set, go down break in 2nd set, take a bogus medical timeout, come back refreshed, kill volandri and win...russian tennis, how can u not love it????

This match is a riot. How many DFs has Pip had in the 2nd set - 65?

Broken on the 1st game of the 3rd. Whomever is writing these scripts should at least be commended for the medical timeout in the 2nd. Some poor suckers out there are going to be thinking that after Gab had his knee taped he felt better and came back to win.

I was on Gabashvili (before the game started) but it would suck to be on the opposite side of the fix and lose...

Any UK based articles on this? There was something not right about the odds offered on Betfair.

Exactly the same thing happened with Tursunov vs Przy, probably even the same people organising it.

It's up to Betfair to hand over the proof. The odds on Gabashvili when he was a set and a break down were -1.31. It should have been well over 2's.

Not a chance, will be filed under "for recycling" :-)

There's just no way to prove it, short of an investigative journalist catching them with a sting.

This sort of thing has happened quite a few times btw: Kohl/Chela did it, Kim/Istomin last year, etc etc. These 2-way fixes where both players are involved are not the norm though, the straight tank by one player is vastly more common.
