This is not a make up play by any means, but I spent the afternoon doing some late research on the rest of the card.
First off, high totals in Chase Field are quite overrated. Second,, a 10.5 total for a travel day situation is crazy no matter who is on the mound. On paper, we may not have the most stable of pitching matchups..However, there are reasons that both of these guys can do well. Both pitchers are below 30% flyball pitchers, meaning that their arsenals are already designed for hitters parks.
Let's start with Zack Godley, who definitely has seen his share of ups and downs..but is coming off a solid start in Boston. Godley is a sinker/cutter duo pitcher who has struggled with keeping the ball out of batter's reach, but got it together allowing just two hits against one of the best offenses in baseball. Safe to say, the Mets certainly are far from a consistent offensive juggernaut.
If this game remains relatively close out of the gates, then expect the pressure to be heavy on a lineup that is going to be missing Neil Walker and Yoenis Cespedes again. They have never faced Godley as a team. If he is on point like I expect him to be carrying over from last start, he will be really tough to hit.
Now we are well aware of Arizona's ability to hit left handed pitchers, but this is also a chance for Jon Niese to rebound after giving up 6 runs in a relief effort to this very same team just a week ago. Niese had admitted to being bothered by an emergence of his knee issue, but has stated that at this point it is totally controllable. The Mets bullpen is quite available as well, but Niese should be much better prepared for this Dbacks team having the last five days to actually study them. The Mets are off to San Francisco tomorrow, so they will likely want to get out as soon as they can. The Diamondbacks may take this one lightly knowing that they are a facing a guy they smashed last week...not to mention there is not much additional motivation on their end to win this game.
