Online wagering for sporting events is legal only within the borders of the state of Nevada. There is online gambling in Nevada with licensed book; however, the only one I know of is done by Stations Casinos. Leroy's also has phone wagering and is launching a smart phone app that will allow for wagering through that vehicle as well. There is no reason to believe any legally licensed sports book in Nevada could not offer some form of online sports betting for Nevadans within the state borders. Apparently it is not so lucrative to Stations Casinos and Leroy's or others such as Harrahs, MGM, Wynn, and Sands Corp would be doing the same. It also appears that the new bill that has passed committee in the US House of Reps. is set up so that future poker licenses would not be issued to any corporation that is deemed to have participated in illegal internet gambling. So I think that is why the likes of Harrah's and MGM, etc are possibly not entering that small online market.

As for why sports betting online is not legal for US citizens it is governed by the Wire Act passed by our government nearly half a century ago. Add to that the UIGEA which attempts to block funding of online sports books and you have seen that the Department of Justice is clearly hostile towards online sports gambling. One provision of the new poker bill would have any deposit to an online sports book operating illegally be subject to a 50% tax to be paid by the depositor. This provision will probably allow them to start prosecuting online sports betters as tax evaders. Remember that is a favorite tool of the government. It is ultimately how they got Al Capone and Pete Rose.

The people I know with accounts in Nevada have to fly in every weekend to play. You can have an account open at a Nevada book, but you have to have a Nevada address.

With both the Stations online account and the Leroy's phone account (and future smart phone app) you have to be within the borders of Nevada to make a bet. That is based on an IP address coming from inside Nevada or having one of the pagers that Leroy's gives out with their phone account that verifies you are in Nevada (in fact, it may be required to be inside Clark County). I have neither so I cannot say with 100% assurance what the rules are.

I lived in vegas for many years and had a phone account with stations casinos and used my cell phone when i was in Arizona and in Cali with no problems at all as far as betting online you had to be in the state of Nevada to bet. If you have an account in Nevada and are in another state if you dont have a cell phone number in the state you can have a friend in the state call and have a 3 way call so you can place your bets..........
