Call Congress today and tell them you oppose HR 6870- Its anti-sports betting

Urgent- Call your Representative in Congress and tell them you OPPOSE H.R. 6870- The Payments System Protection Act of 2008

There is a House Financial Services hearing on this bill today.

This bill if enacted into law throws sports betting under the bus. It will accelerate enactment of the UIGEA regulations against sports betting sites.

This bill will make it even harder to deposit and withdraw money from your online sportsbooks.

Call your Congressman or Congresswoman at (202) 224-3121 and tell them you vote and you oppose H.R. 6870.

Man I wish I could call someone and have an influence on this. I'm not American but the stuff that has gone on down there has damaged the industry for the whole world.

You'd probably have as much impact calling those idiots as me, Mud. I'm quite certain that my congressman, Lamar Smith, has me on call block by now. And I'm pretty sure that both of our senators, "Gimme a K-A-Y" Bailey Hutchison and John "My Nickname In College Was Bimbo" Cornyn, are also tired of hearing from me.

if life for american players is harder, it is harder for everyone, the americans provide the most liquidity to the market, if the books don't have enough players , they don't stay in business and no one wins,
yes we canadians have our government parlay cards, but we wouldn't be playing if those were any good

From the limited amount I've read about the bill, it seems that it wouldn't really change the environment for sports betting and would positively impact the environment for poker. While I would love sports betting to be included, it seems a step in the right direction.

    If JC says it will:

    I'm inclined to believe it.

I think Barney Frank's intentions are the exact opposite of what you're thinking. He isn't out trying to make online gambling a felony. He wants to propose a bill to get people to think about the UIGEA. I think he hopes that if the bill passes and the Treasury, Justice Dept, and Congress take a closer look at this issue, more people will realize how stupid it is.

This legislation is going nowhere, in my opinion. I think most House members won't even read it in full, they'll be told by others it promotes sports gambling, even if it doesn't, and they'll vote it down if it ever reaches the House floor.

Here is a direct quote from John Pappas, Poker Players Alliance Executive Director, for your reading pleasure:

“The Poker Players Alliance believes HR 6870 is a strong compromise bill that will provide much-needed clarity to the UIGEA through a formal rulemaking process, while immediately enforcing existing gambling laws that ban online sports betting."

Doesnt matter to me. I know 2 locals that have deep pockets. They will take up to $50,000 wagers. They will also take players from other states if I vouch for them. They both use pinnacles odds and will take any bet pinnacle offers.

    Having just watched the hearing......

Although Barney Frank voted for the amendment, he said he still OPPOSES the original bill.....

For that matter, he added, (something like) I don't think the government should be telling everybody what to do with their leisure time.......

is there anyone actually lobbying against this bill?
is there a senate bill too? There's some pretty lame stuff that gets proposed in the house. The similar bill either stalls or never sees the floor in the senate because they have other things more important to their constituants.

I would take a guess that 75% of online sports bettors have no way of playing with a local because they don't know any reliable locals. Or don't know any locals period.

Most people still betting online are doing so because its the only place for them to bet.

I can't say for sure because it could just be the sample of people I know. But, of my friends in the states (people that dont post on gambling forums) the vast majority use bookies these days.

Maybe the number is inflated. My point is that there are a lot of people playing online that have no access to a reliable bookie. Either shutins or live in small towns.

I wouldn’t even want to hazard a guess as to the percentages, but I’m one of the players who doesn’t use a traditional bookie and don’t know of any if I wanted to. I don’t doubt they exist reasonably close to me, and that I could find one if I were to travel in the right circles, but I know of none now. And I have to think there are a lot of other people in the same boat, for whom it is vastly easier to bet at an online offshore site than to hang out in bars hoping to stumble upon someone who (illegally) takes bets for a living.

I think people who have certain forms of “street smarts” assume “everyone” knows where to buy drugs, buy stolen property, find an illegal bookie, etc., but you might be surprised how many of us are still pretty square and clueless about a lot of that stuff. There are a lot of people for whom it’s really just never been a part of their life. And some of those people would still do things like bet sports in Vegas or with an offshore account at some place they found on the Internet.

I wouldn’t say that’s the only reason I’ve always played offshore instead of with street bookies. I also think I can make a lot more money with bonuses, low vig, online betting, line shopping multiple outs, betting quarters and props and oddball stuff, etc. than I can calling in bets to a traditional bookie. (Though I take it a lot of regular bookies are affiliated with sites that do offer some of those things now, so maybe the differences aren’t as great as they used to be. But I’ve never really looked into it.)
