First, early on, I read many injuries and 1 death. I was wondering how there could only be one death.

Later I read 1 death but something like 99 people missing.

That's a little more clear and makes a little more sense, as tragic as it is.

    built in 1981

i'm sure there were many warning signs missed on this tragic event

The building had been about to undergo extensive repairs for rusted steel and damaged concrete, Kenneth S. Direktor, a lawyer involved in the project, said on Thursday. The repairs had been scheduled as part of a review and re-certification process for 40-year-old buildings

Is this the same condo, in the news last week, that evicted everyone to do these repairs and the people wouldn't leave?

I wonder if this was inevitable given the owner (if it's the same) tried and warned everyone about it.

Miami has a very high water table and much of the construction from 70s thru late 80s was on land that couldn't support taller building and in a flood plane that wasn't properly assessed (the new plane goes 14' above sea level)

looks like different place, i'm sure we would of heard about it by now in news if it was same place, but who knows what kind of skeletons they will find with this building, i'm sure many warning signs were outthere

There is no one owner it’s a condo building, however many condos there were is how many owners there are. The condo owners association will be on the hook if there was a structural flaw they knew about and didn’t get repaired. The association will have insurance by law on the building and when the lawsuits start they will just file bankruptcy. I’ve been on a condo board both in Fl and GA and it’s right up there with F rated books when it comes to honesty. I guarantee we will see some shady shit come out of this real quick

Could be column at the lower level failed due to rebar corrosion. The salty moisture from the sea corrodes steel much faster than inland. It only takes one of the columns to fail for progressive collapse of the building frame.

Residents from the area said they already knew what building collapsed when they had heard. People said the building was sinking since the 90's.

If a concrete framed building is sinking for years you will notice visible cracks in the walls, floors, doors jamming etc. A concrete framed building is rigid and not elastic like a steel framed building that can deform without visible cracks.

wow pavyracer talking like a structural engineer......thought only degens were on this site

I'm guessing the soil finally gave way and with it the foundation followed and down she went....maybe liquification?
I did read they were doing concrete repairs, what they entailed who knows, but I agree with the above....no way you wouldn't notice cracking would could lead to spalling or pop outs of legitimate chunks unless it was all underground

I don't know if they are lying but a building doesn't collapse because of a settlement of 1/16" per year. When a building collapses like this is because of the loss of stength of column(s). The columns at the parking of this type of a building are spaced further apart and carry much more load than columns at upper floors that support the apartments so that the cars can park under the apartments and there is probably not any redundancy in case one column fails for the other columns to support the load. A concrete column when it fails is going to implode and lose all strength unlike a steel column that can buckle slowly and still be able to carry some weight.
