If you're audience knows you're gay, then they no longer believe the macho "leading man" girl getting characters that you play. It's pretty simple.
The public has this habit of mixing the personal and professional lives of their entertainers because that same public has little depth and imagination. They live vicariously through not just the fictional characters, but whatever the media brings them as well, papparazzi style.
Publicists and promoters alike know this fact.
