    pls explain the premise of giving gifts etc

    I know my point of view is different from the mast majority, and i'm okay with that. So, my girlfriend is going to a baby shower..her cousins daughter and she is giving 50 bucks towards that gift. She is really not in a position to be doing so, asking me to borrow money etc...but what exactly is the reason and benefit of giving these gifts for showers, marriages..etc...we dont have kids so the ability to get it back is nill. Is the idea to get the money back as she/we will have celebrations and what not...not trying to be a douche here, Just trying to understand in these tough times, what exactly is the meaning behind this.

    It is expensive to start raising a child and showers are a way for everyone to help pitch in for the new mother to get a head start. Same thing for a new marriage.

    i have been dealing with this issue since high school. fukks i cant even remember asking me for money because they fukked and had a kid, or because they got married. Im about to throw my own party, ive managed to not have a kid or get married since highschool, i should get an award or something.
