Have You Ever Seen This "Walmart - High Cost Of Low Prices" Video?

Sort of depressing. But... this is business in America. Money = Power. And Power will always win.

Watched some but not all of this video

My point of view on Wal Mart is this: At least we have a choice to comply. Don't like Wal-Marts policies? Don't buy from them. Try that with the government and get your assets seized and go to jail.

    All countries have governments.

My post isn't a criticism of the US gov., it's a comparison of free market vs. socialist economies

Why would someone move from the U.S. based on what Wal Mart does?

Oh ok, yes I was. It was a philosophical comparison of gov. power vs. private sector power, not just in the US

So then my point was, like choosing not to shop at Walmart, you can also choose which country you live in.

True. It's much more feasible to not shop at Wal Mart than to move to another country and change citizenship though

I watched half the video when I first posted. Watched the 2nd half yesterday... you can't be upset with Wal-Mart... they use all the LAWS to their advantage. They hustle like any other business in America. I feel sad for the other family owned operations. I truly do. My heart goes out to all of them... I don't know if you would say it's just luck of the draw where Wal-Mart places their business or what? Or... did MOM & POP family owned business take itself for granted? In business you always need to be thinking fresh, new, exciting ways to produce. Sometimes people just turtle up and think the money will always come in. It's not always the case.

As for why someone would shop at Wal-Mart? I'll admit... I shop there all the time. It's because I want to save money. Kroger is high. Meijer is high. Wal-Mart is cheap. If you want to take anything back... they'll do it... hassle free. Regardless of what people say... if you're a family man and want to save $$$$ for your family... you can easily save $100 a month on common items you buy for your family at Wal-Mart without any coupons.

A few points to add to that spot on post you have there.

1- Even without coupons they price match so it's a win win if you go that route

2- For all the trash talking about their employment practices...they ARE the largest employer in the nation meaning they do give more people a pay check than any other business in the country so they deserve praise for that.

3- They may pay low wages in some people's eyes but at least they pay more than Burger King and they offer a place to get items for cheap for those same low wage workers plus those on assistance. Sure sure there is a moral debate about the cycle of $$ they have created - they employ at low wages then offer EBT access to items and ensure that the profits come right back in from the same paychecks they just handed out for a net positive but this is brilliance in business modeling and perfectly legal in my opinion.

4- It's not by chance or luck of the draw where they set up shop either. They have a division that sends out scouts to work with local chambers and zoning/real estate companies to find +EV locations to build. It's a methodical process and has worked so far.

I'd absolutely LOVE for one of the anti-Wally World critics to give us a better idea (in real world rules not dreamland) of how WalMart should conduct their business.

Specifically regarding pricing....wages and contractual agreements with the thousands of vendors and manufacturers and transports.

    love walmart, hate the customers

here is something to noodle on you dumb fukks

you every see a walmart be the only thing in the area? count the number of fast food joints, restaurants, coffee shops any fukking store you can think of within a stone's throw of any walmart. count how many people work in those establishments. walmat creates tons of human traffic in and out of their doors.

think about that next time before whining about walmart being evil. fukking libs, never extrapolate thoughts out past 'walmart sucks cuz hillary said so'.

    Playing Devil's advocate here...

Why does Wal-Mart as a monopoly, and it IS a monopoly, get to destroy all competitors?

Why does our government break up monopolies like Standard Oil but allow Wal-Mart to destroy the Mom & Pops, the heart of America?

Good 'ole Standard Oil and the 'Ma Bells' of American history.

Points can be for and against really but at the end of the day the consumer and other businesses are better off with Wal Mart than just the oil/railroad issues with Standard and telecommunications with Bell.

I shy away from calling WalMart a clear monopoly personally simply because if I want goods they aren't limited specifically to shopping there...I can go to Target or Freds or Dollar General or a few other places. It's a bit different from a Microsoft system being in every computer before Apple...only being able to buy BP gas vs another brand and so on. Can't patent gas or vodka to a specific company is what I'm getting at.

Every industry has a clear leader, or bogeyman, depending on how you see it but the vast majority see them as a positive on their lives at the end of the day. Retail, agriculture, computers, phones, energy...they all have a giant that is a target.

What the hell is Fred's or Dollar General??? We don't have those options available AT THE SAME PRICE in my neck of the woods.

You avoid the question... AGAIN, why does our government break up monopolies yet allow this wal-mart tyrant to trample Mom & Pops???

As a graduate of The University of Arkansas, I love walmart. Kinda have to when they essentially fund your school. Went to the Sam Walton College of Business and I'd say about a fourth of the students in our business college end up working at Walmart Corporate (just up the road in Bentonville, Arkansas). Lots of complaints but like what has been said, they employ more people than anyone in the nation and they run an efficient business to save people money. Who doesn't like saving money?

Dollar General is actually taking over retail little by little...great move from investment standpoint going forward too...but that's a different topic.

Where are you at that they don't have any other discount retailers?

Specifically to the point of a govt breakup....why would they? Standard was known to buy up railroads and only allow their product to be shipped...etc. SUre they would take small losses by undercutting and low balling competitors for a bigger picture play but Wal Mart does so as a business model, not as a dick move JUST to kill off competition. SO they shouldn't be broken up.

You have to take into account the loads of other businesses who benefit through Wal Mart as partners...that is another key argument as to why they aren't a monopoly (black and white) at least. Companies compete for shelf space just as they do with grocery chains....product owners also are able to sell to them which in turn creates jobs for that company, the list goes on and on.

Playing Devil's advocate again... How would you explain the $100 Billion, that's $100,000,000,000, of net worth among the six prominent Walton's? Is this not a "Redistribution of wealth"?

I don't see it as 'redistribution of wealth' no. I see a successful venture and applaud the family and they should be allowed to spend their money as they please. The same way the guys who brought is Home Depot and the lady who made Build a Bear or the guys at Google.

I never understood why people shopped at Walmart. I don't know what that guy was saying earlier I've never found Meijer to be more expensive. Hell Fredrijk Meijer taught Sam Walton everything he knew about one-stop shopping. Even Walmart's so-called "Supercenters" have a grocery selection that would make some gas stations look like Whole Foods.

Just about every one of my family members has a Costco membership and they swear by it. They have the greatest snack bar ever.

Buy 15 items at Meijer and buy the same 15 at Wal-Mart... I promise you the Wal-Mart side will be cheaper. Meijer pricing has gone up... people haven't noticed. As for Costco and Sam's Club they are almost the same. I spoke to a Sam's Club manager one day because an item I purchase is sometimes in.... then the next month it's out. 90 days later it's back in stock... and the next month it's out. I SAID... WHY DO YOU GUYS DO THAT?!?!!? He said... I shouldn't even be telling you this but you seem like a smart kid... I'm not going to bullsh#$ you. Each Sam's Club holds approx 2000 items... and each month we make sure we have room for those 2000 items. If a vendor raises the price on an item... we have to go to the next item in line that was "off the shelf" and replace it. Our goal? We shop around with our vendors... some have amazing deals... We buy the palates. Some jerk us around and we tell them to F off in a nice way. It's business kid. So the reasons why your item comes and goes... because the vendor probably raised the price. It's not because we don't like you. Like I said... the manager was amazing. The dude told it like it is.

As for a city called Southgate... in Michigan. They recently made a Wal-Mart there 2 year ago. Opened in 2011. In late 2009 planning of that Wal-Mart was in the making. What's shocking is what head Wal-Mart officials told the city of Southgate. They said... we really want it here... but... we can go to another city. What will you do for us to build it here? How does 1 million a year in property tax reduction sound for 7 years? Wal-Mart officials said... where do we sign?

Do you call this a crooked world? Or a savvy CEO?

Thats basic economics. They WILL set up shop...in his city or the next...so offer the $1 Million gift in return for more than that in return for years to come through generated revenues and jobs.

It should also be mentioned that there is an equilibrium being reached at this point. Wal Mart has gotten to be so crowded, its parking lots so big, its lines so long, that many people would rather spend extra money to avoid the headaches. It will never be a monopoly because there will always be a receptive alternative market.

The two things I like most about Wal Mart are the low prices and the one stop shopping for everything.

no wal marts in NYC. lots and lots of independant stores. if the individual communities vote them to come to the town, then they will come. maybe some towns will be wal mart free, and other towns can be wal mart towns, and people can pick which town they want to be a part of. the non-wal mart town can have the little businesses flouish, and the wal mart towns can have the cheap prices.
