2-year-old boy shoots himself in head

A two-year-old boy from Corsicana, Texas, a town of just under 24,000 people located between Dallas and Waco, shot himself in the head Wednesday night with his father’s handgun while his dad was looking away, police said.

The victim was identified as Kinsler Allen Davis, according to The Associated Press.

Davis was rushed to the local hospital in Fredricksberg before medics put him on a life flight to Dallas, but even doctors there could not save him.

A police statement obtained by Dallas-based CBS DFW explained that all physical evidence so far in the case indicates the shooting was accidental.

The boy found his 35-year-old father’s handgun while the man was interacting with something in his bedroom’s closet, with his son just feet away.

“As you can imagine, they’re extremely upset and distraught,” Corsicana police chief Randy Bratton reportedly said. Raw Story

Someone dying of a gun shot wound accident or not is a violent gun incident, no? Since when is someone that is killed by a firearm not a violent incident?

They're unfortunate accidents. When I was around 8-9, I lost a really good friend of mine in the same way. From looking at a quick search, it looks like the average is 100-125 accidental gun shootings (by children) per year in the US.

Florida boy, 11, shot dead by 4-year-old

Authorities say an 11-year-old boy has died after a 4-year-old accidentally shot him in a Lake City apartment.

The child who was shot on Sunday died Tuesday at Shands at the University of Florida in Gainesville.

Lake City police were called to the Cedar Park Apartments on Sunday, where they found Jarvan Jackson injured inside one of the units.

He was in critical condition when he was taken to the hospital in nearby Gainesville. Authorities say Jackson died at 2:47 p.m. Tuesday.

The Gainesville Sun police and the Department of Children and Families are investigating how the younger child got the gun. They also are trying to determine whether there was adequate supervision for the children at the home. AP

According the latest CDC data we have, from 2010, there were 36 children under the age of 10 that were accidentally killed by guns in that year..

2/3s of those were shot by people possessing criminal records. So, basically, don't let your kids play with drug dealers and you'll be fine. Your kids are 30x more likely to die in a car accident and 20x more likely to drown. 90/60x more if you don't let them play at a felon's house.

Gunmen shoot into Calif. home, 10-year-old killed

Authorities were searching for at least two gunmen who walked up to the door of a Northern California home and opened fire, killing a 10-year-old girl and injuring her parents.

"Whoever these gunmen were, they were directly outside the front door," Sacramento County sheriff's spokesman Sgt. Jason Ramos said Sunday. "This was not a drive-by. These gunmen approached the house and shot inside."

Sacramento County sheriff's officials suspected that a family member had gang ties.

"You have to be hard pressed to think a 10-year-old girl was the intended target," Ramos said.

At least a dozen shots were fired from two guns at the house on Saturday night, killing Elvira Campos and injuring her parents, Ramos said. The names of the parents - both of whom were in their 40s and were expected to survive - were not released.

The girl's 14-year-old brother was playing video games in a back room and was not hurt.

Detectives were canvassing the neighborhood for possible witnesses and forensic units were gathering evidence at the home Sunday, where a cluster of bullet holes marked a front window and more holes were found in the front door and a window frame.

The family had lived in the home in an area about 11 miles northeast of downtown Sacramento for less than a year, Ramos said. There were no records of sheriff's officials being sent there previously, he said.

"I can't even imagine what would bring people to do that," neighbor James Corbett told The Associated Press. Corbett, who lives about three houses down from where the girl was shot, described the neighborhood as quiet, with a "bunch of young families."

On Sunday morning, about a half dozen grieving relatives arrived at the home, The Sacramento Bee reported.

Sheriff's officials were also investigating a separate shooting Sunday morning that took place not far from the home. The victim of that shooting - a 32-year-old man who survived - was "definitely a gang member" and detectives were looking at the possibility the shootings were related, Ramos said. ABC News

Seems like this happens once or twice a week
ASHEBORO, N.C. — A 2-year-old boy is recovering after Randolph County deputies say he found a handgun inside his home, put it in his mouth, and the weapon fired.
Deputies say the toddler found his father's .45-caliber handgun in his parents' bedroom on Saturday.
Authorities say the boy is expected to survive after being taken to a Winston-Salem hospital. Sheriff's Capt. Derrick Hill says the bullet missed vital arteries in the neck and head, as well as the child's spinal cord.
The names of the child and his parents haven't been released.
The Randolph County Sheriff's Office and the district attorney will decide if the parents should be charged for leaving the pistol improperly locked.

Baby killed, two women injured in shooting in Pittsburgh's East Hills

    May 22, 2013 1:15 am

By Lexi Belculfine / Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

A baby was killed and two women were wounded at a picnic in East Hills, when gunfire exploded Tuesday evening.

The shooting happened around 7:30 p.m. off the 2300 block of East Hills Drive in the Second East Hills housing complex, where a group was picnicking in a cul-de-sac.

Possibly three gunmen got out of a vehicle and began firing at the crowd of people, police spokeswoman Diane Richard said. City homicide detectives do not believe that the victims were the intended targets, she said. No arrests had been made late Tuesday night.

One neighbor said it sounded like fireworks had gone off; another said she heard many shots. Police located multiple shell casings.

A 20-year-old woman, who sustained a gunshot wound to the chest and back, was lying on top of the baby when police arrived. She was listed in critical condition.

The other woman who was shot, a 19-year-old, was taken into surgery for her wounds and was listed in serious but stable condition. Both were taken to UPMC Presbyterian.
The 18-month-old boy was transported to Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC where he was pronounced dead.

None of the victims' identities had been released Tuesday night, though the women are from the East Hills area, Ms. Richard said.

The complex has security cameras, and police said they were waiting for a technician Tuesday night to review footage.

Reports of gunfire in the area had been building up in the past few weeks, police said.
When police arrived Tuesday evening, Zone 5 Lt. Richard Pritchard said there were hundreds of bystanders and the scene was "pure chaos."

At least 13 marked police units responded to the call, and a crowd of neighbors gathered and looked on from sidewalks and porches.

"I'm feeling hurt," said Claudia Wells, pastor at Grace and Truth Church, which holds services in the East Hills Community Center.

"We're not going to tolerate this. If we have to gate this community, we will."

She said she hoped neighbors in the housing complex would be more watchful and attentive to who was visiting the area.

"Our community has come a long way out of the darkness. ... It was a war zone."

While police were still investigating and daylight hours slipped away, Grace and Truth Church pastors and neighbors planned a gathering to pray for protection and for the families involved.

"We will be there if they need us," assistant pastor Montique Shorter said.

these numbers don't add up. if 8 kids a day are killed by guns, that equals almost 3000 a year. But the next sentence says the number is 565.

Teen arrested for Columbine-like attack on school

Oregon police said a 17-year-old student accused of planning to bomb his school was inspired by the 1999 massacre at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colo.

Grant Alan Acord was arrested Thursday after police discovered a cache of homemade bombs under the floorboards of his room at his mother's house in West Albany, Ore., The (Portland) Oregonian reported.

He will be charged as an adult on suspicion of attempted aggravated murder and faces two counts of possession of a destructive device and two counts of manufacture of a destructive device, the newspaper said.

Police said they recovered at least six bombs from Acord's room, including a pipe bomb, a napalm bomb, Molotov cocktails and a bomb made with drain cleaner.

Benton County District Attorney John Haroldson said the 1999 Columbine shootings allegedly served as an inspiration for the teen, who police said had extensive notes and written plans in his room on how to carry out his attack. Acord allegedly wanted to top the Columbine attack at his own school, West Albany High School, CNN reported.

"This was a very methodical process," Haroldson said. "He took time to even get to this point."

Colorado teens Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold killed 12 fellow students and one teacher, and injured 24 people on April 20, 1999 before killing themselves. UPI

No. Well, I wouldn't know are the numbers right but:

You'll see the first figure talks about people under 20, while the additional figures mentioned below speak of people under 18 and people under 12. I don't know about the most recent data that sentence was talking about but common sense and older FBI data from 2009 seems to suggest if you're 18 or 19, it's unhealthy for you...

California man kills one daughter, wounds another before shooting himself

An Orosi man killed one daughter and critically wounded another daughter before taking his own life early Monday morning, the Tulare County Sheriff's Department said.

Anthony Alvarez, 63, appears to have died of self-inflicted gun shots, the Sheriff's Department said. He is the father of the two other people involved in the shooting, authorities said.

Jennifer Kimble, 37, died, and Valerie Alvarez, 33, was wounded and air lifted to a Fresno hospital, authorities said. She is in critical condition, the sheriff's department said.

Three children in the home were not harmed. The two boys, 13 and 11, and one girl, 8, were the grandchildren of Anthony Alvarez, authorities said.

The children were removed from the home and reunited with their father, who was at work when the shooting occurred, the sheriff's department said.

Authorities were alerted to the shooting at 4:39 a.m. when the 8-year-old girl called the sheriff's department to report gunfire in the home.

Investigation of the shootings is continuing. The Fresno Bee

11-year-old girl shot by stray bullet in Brooklyn

    Taylonni Mazyck

A Brooklyn teen has been charged in the shooting of an 11-year-old girl that could leave her paralyzed.

Cops said Kane Cooper, 17, was apprehended after being observed on surveillance video following the Friday night shooting that struck Taylonni Mazyck.

Mazyck was hit in the neck as she ran to escape the hail of bullets. She fell to the ground after being struck.

It may be the last move she will ever make.

Taylonni was outside her Gates Ave. home in Bedford-Stuyvesant with her mother and 7-month-old niece about 8:30 p.m. when Cooper allegedly started shooting and hit her with a blast that may have left her paralyzed, police and shattered family members said.

Cooper has been charged with attempted murder, assault, reckless endangerment and criminal use of a firearm.

“We heard shots,” said Taylonni’s mother, Priscilla Samuel, 46. “They came out of nowhere. We tried to run, but my daughter Tu-Tu fell down.”

Samuel ran over to grab Taylonni and saw the young girl was bleeding.

“She was calling out to me, ‘Mommy, Mommy,’” she said. “I saw the bullet in my baby’s face and I went crazy. Everything I learned as a nurse’s tech went out the window.”

Paramedics rushed Taylonni to Kings County Hospital, where doctors told Samuel her daughter may be paralyzed from the neck down. The bullet, doctors explained, is lodged in a vertebra of her neck.

Taylonni’s sister Latavia Fields, 26, said at the hospital that her family had just moved to Gates Ave., near Throop Ave. They thought the neighborhood was safe because an NYPD “Sky Watch” tower, which takes photos and video for blocks in every direction, stands across the street. An NYPD spokesman could not confirm Friday whether a Sky Watch tower is located near the shooting scene.

“There were cops on the block all day long,” Fields claimed. “What were they doing?”

“We were in the right place at the wrong time,” Fields said. “Why can’t we be out in front of our own home enjoying the breeze? There is no justice when this can happen to an 11-year-old girl.”

13-year-old shot, killed by another teen in Las Vegas

A teenage girl was shot and killed inside a home in south Las Vegas, Nevada Tuesday afternoon, according to Las Vegas police.

Officers responded to a report of an accidental shooting at a house in the 1600 block of Little Crow Avenue, near Spencer Street and Pebble Road, at 3:25 p.m. A teen was transported to the hospital and died about 30 minutes later, according to a source close to the investigation.

Initial reports said that one 13-year-old shot another 13-year-old, according to a Las Vegas police spokesperson. Police were initially investigating the shooting as accidental, but as of Tuesday night, it was unclear if that was still the case.

“At this time we do not know if the injury was accidental or on purpose. That’s still under investigation,” said Las Vegas homicide Sgt. Annette Darr.

Darr said that three juveniles were inside the home at the time of the shooting, and it was not clear if any adults were at home when the shooting occurred.

Neighbors said that the street is always full of children playing, but that this has been a tragic reminder to them about the safety of their own children.

“It makes me worry about whether I let even the people I know have my kids,” said neighbor Kelly Lincoln.

Las Vegas police stressed the need to keep guns in secure places.

“Gun safety is paramount whenever a parent has a gun in the home,” Darr said. “The gun should be kept under lock and key at all times,” Las Vegas Review Journal

4-year-old boy fatally shoots his father

A 4- year-old boy in the U.S. state of Arizona accidently shot his father to death after he found a gun in a friend’s house they were visiting.

The father, 35-year-old Justin Stanfield Thomas, was a veteran who served in the Army Special Forces.

According to media reports, the owner of the gun was also a military veteran who kept a loaded gun for protection.

"This appears to be an accident. There was no conflict in the stories of those in the house," said Prescott Valley Police Sgt. Brandon Bonney.

"We want to remind people without making a villain of this person, that if a child is visiting your home, the first thing to do would be put the firearm away," said Bonney.

Firearms have become more available to young children in the U.S. in these hard economic times when many parents have to work extra hard to provide for their families and leave their children alone at home, according to Dr. Randy Short, a member of the Dignity, Human Rights and Peace Organization.

“There is a real problem that American people are underpaid so they are not even able to be around their children to supervise them so when you have a gun there, that puts them at risk,” Dr. Short said.

Dr. Short also blamed the accessibility of guns for the rise of gun violence in America.

According to The Washington Post, the U.S. has the highest rate of gun ownership in the world.

FBI figures show that 8,583 people were killed by guns in the United States in 2011 (the last year for which data is available), which amounts to 24 people a day.

Each year, about 4 to 7 million new firearms are manufactured for sale in the United States. An estimated 2 million secondhand firearms are sold each year as well, according to bradycampaign.org

And I'm sure your answer is for all law abiding citizens to turn over their guns so that criminals have an easier time?

check out the number of crimes committed in places where guns are held by many vs held by a few.

guns don't commit crimes, people do. If gun owners are too dumb to secure their firearms from their kids, their kids will either shoot themselves or someone else, and that owner will go to prison.

US police post reward for suspected gunman

New York police have identified a bike-riding suspect in a shooting of a 9-year-old girl, posting a $22,000 reward for him.

Billy James Jr., 17, allegedly fired at Amanda Chauan on Saturday while her kid brother was watching her, the NY Times reported.

Chauan who was shot in the stomach was immediately sent to the hospital and is now in stable condition, according to her family members.

The suspected shooter, remained on the lam late Saturday, cops said, and his intended target remained unclear, according to the report.

A witness said that the shooter was riding a BMX-style bike. “He rode up ... like he was trying to see who was out there, and then he did a loop out front”, the Times quoted Sam Fernandez as saying. “He started shooting from the middle of the street”.

After squeezing off about six quick shots on Bailey Av. & 234th St., Bronx, the gunman escaped.

Cops originally released a photo of a man riding a bike on the sidewalk near the crime scene but that man was located, questioned and released, police said.

Amanda became the city’s fifth gunshot victim 15 or younger since May 18. Previous victims include a 14-year-old Queens girl killed while riding a city bus; an 11-year-old Brooklyn girl paralyzed by a stray bullet; a 15-year-old wounded while rescuing a toddler; and a 12-year-old Manhattan girl who was grazed by a bullet that landed in her hair.

Since the December 14 shooting in Newtown, Connecticut elementary school that left 20 first-grade students and six staff members dead, more than 5,000 people have been killed in gun-related violence in the U.S., according to an interactive data collection project between Slate.com and the Twitter feed, @GunDeaths.

FBI figures show that 8,583 people were killed by guns in the United States in 2011 (the last year for which data is available), which amounts to 24 people a day.
