The Betty Cash-Vickie Landrum UFO Incident

    THE INCIDENT

Let us take a look at one of the most well researched and thoroughly documented UFO cases in history. The Betty Cash-Vickie Landrum UFO Incident.

On the night of December 29, 1980 Betty Cash, Vickie Landrum, and Vickie's 7 year old grandson Colby Landrum, were driving home to Dayton, Texas. Betty was driving from New Caney to Dayton on Farm to Market road 1485.

Soon, around 9 PM, the three saw a light in the distance and soon, the light took on the appearance of a glowing object slowing moving across the tops of the pine trees. The area they were in was densely populated by pine and oak trees, swamps, and small lakes. As they went along, they thought they were looking at an airplane or helicopter.

Suddenly, ahead of them, was what they described as an immense diamond-shaped object. At regular intervals, the object would shoot down a stream of red-orange flames. Vickie would later state that it was "like a diamond of fire".

They could also hear a constant beeping sound as the object spits out it's flames. Scared out of her wits, Betty came to a stop before her car could drive under the object and it's flaming downpour. She later stated that she believed she was witnessing the end of the world.

They stated that the heat coming from the object was so strong, they had to turn off the car and get out.

As she stood watching, Betty stated that suddenly the sky was filled with helicopters. Betty stated "They seemed to rush in from all directions...it seemed like they were trying to encircle the thing." Betty and Vickie counted 23 helicopters and later identified them as CH-47 Chinooks.

The object then moved to a higher point in the sky and to the southwest with the helicopters in pursuit. "

As Betty returned to her car, the car's metal body was so hot to the touch she could hardly open the front door. She immediately turned the air conditioner on to cool off the inside of the vehicle. Vickie Landrum's hand actually made an imprint into the car's vinyl when she touched the dashboard. Investigator's cited this as proof of their account, although, no photos of the handprint is known to exist.

    THE AFTERMATH

After several miles of dark highway, they left Farm to Market road to take the freeway, ahead they could still see the object illuminating the helicopters which were still trying to encircle it.

After a fast trip home, all three witnesses became extremely sick.

Betty's head and neck were blistered, her eyes were swollen shut, and she became nauseated.

Vickie and Colby suffered similar sickness but not quite as severe as Betty's. Colby had problems with his eyes and Vickie started losing her hair. After a couple of days of being cared for at Vickie's home, Betty checked into a hospital where she was treated as a burn victim for the next 15 days.

Her hair began to fall out and her eyes had been swollen so badly, she couldn't see for about a week.

All three victims were treated for radiation poisoning and their condition by doctors were listed as life-threatening.

Before long, skin sores developed, weight loss ensued, and skin cancer developed.

As for the origin of the helicopters, local air bases were questioned but none would admit to sending any helicopters out that night.

The only public statement made by military officials was made by Fort Hood Press Officer Major Tony Geishauser. In an interview with the Corpus Christi Caller newspaper, he stated that no Fort Hood aircraft were in the Houston area that night. He states:

"I don't know any other place around here that would have that number of helicopters." "I don't know what it could be....unless there was a super secret thing going on and I wouldn't necessarily know about it."

Eventually, Cash and Landrum contacted their US senators, Lloyd Bentsen and John Tower. They suggested that the witnesses file a complaint with the Judge Advocate Claims office at Bergstrom Air Force base. In August 1981, Betty, Vickie, and Colby were interviewed at length by personnel at Bergstrom Air Force base and were told they should hire a lawyer and seek compensation for their injuries.

The case wound it's way through the courts for several years. Betty and Vickie were suing for $20 million.

On August 21, 1986 a US District Court Judge dismissed the case noting that the plaintiffs could not prove that the helicopters were associated with the US government and that military officials testified that the US military did not have a large, diamond-shaped aircraft in their possession.

Betty Cash died at the age of 71 on December 29, 1998. Exactly 18 years after the night of the incident.

Vickie Landrum died September 12, 2007. Seven days before her 84th birthday.
