Americans: Uninformed, Misinformed, Dumbest, Gullible People
Walter Williams wrote a column recently with the title “Gullible Americans.” He begins by talking about the income tax. A few weeks ago, I did a commentary on the history of the income tax, so some of the information should sound familiar.
He reminds us that during the legislative debate about the 16th amendment, President William Taft and congressional supporters argued that only the rich would ever have to pay federal income taxes. When the amendment was enacted in 1913, only one-half of one percent did pay taxes. They were people whose earnings exceeded $6 million in today’s dollars. They paid 7 percent. Walter Williams argues that Americans would never have been ratified the amendment if it wasn’t for the fact they have been duped into believing only the rich would pay income taxes.
It is worth noting that the founders made it impossible to have such a tax. That being said, Abraham Lincoln did impose an income tax on Americans to finance the war. It was later repealed. During the Grover Cleveland administration, Congress enacted the Income Tax Act of 1894. The next year, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled it unconstitutional. That is why the 16th amendment had to be passed in order to have an income tax.
Walter Williams also cites Medicare as another example of gullible Americans. At the beginning, in 1966, Medicare cost $3 billion. The House Ways and Means Committee, along with President Lyndon Johnson, estimated that Medicare would cost an inflation-adjusted $12 billion by 1990. They were off by almost an order of magnitude. In 1990, Medicare topped $107 billion. Today’s Medicare tab comes to $523 billion.
We as Americans have been gullible when believing that a new tax won’t affect us and we have been gullible in thinking that a new government program will stay within the estimated budget. These are lessons we should learn and apply the next time there is a debate about taxing or spending. I’m Kerby Anderson, and that’s my point of view.

Most Americans are content. As long as people are content, they go about their everyday life and do not make waves. They want nothing to change. So they become uninformed. They stick their heads in the sand. When you are uninformed on an issue, you are ignorant about that issue. So most Americans content, uninformed and ignorant.

As for gullible, I don't think so. I think if anything most Americans are skeptical.
