I'd lean 68 over 48 but not sure what the rule is.

could just as easily be 183 = multiply last 2 numbers in the sequence - 1

not enough info to say for sure

    3x-1 is the pattern.

I don't know what the 'rule' is though.

I googled the numbers. I don't actually understand the explanation and think 3x -1 is easier (and gives the same answer), but its clearly what they are looking for:

    12. This sequence consists out of two alternating series.
    3 8 23 68 203 608

    1. The first series shows the relation between the 1st and 3rd number, 3rd and 5th etc. in this case this following relation exists: 23-3=20 203-23=180.
This difference is a multiple of each other by a factor of 180/20=9.
    2. The second series shows the relation between the 2nd and 4th number, the 4th and 6th etc. in this case 68-8=60. Finding the next number in the sequence means using the relation from the first series.
    3. This means that 60 must be multiplied by 9, resulting in 540. This number is added to 68 which results in 608 as next number in the sequence.

If it is for a 5th grader I would suspect the 'correct' answer will be 48.

Especially if they know everyone will google it and get the answer above.
