    I want to say that 75% of athletes are broke after their 5 year anniversary of playing in the league. That goes for Joe the 5th string corner back who makes 400K for his 2 years in the league and Michael Vick the Starting quarterback with a 100 million dollar deal. These guys make good money but make horrible horrible life decisions.

    JJ makes a great point see it all the time on tv what all they have been thru. Would like to see more of them say how fortunate they are to be living the life they are. Yeah they work hard but so do alot of other people that make minumum wage. Or work 2 to 3 jobs raising kids on there own. Also don't think i've seen many soldiers whine about what all they been thru and not making enough money. JJ great post man couldn't agree more.

    when I came to Costa Rica, I was told, by numerous people, that you could get 8-balls of the finest sh*t for $10 easy

    jj i have been here for over three years now - it turns out that was a COMPLETE LIE

    I have to pay $20 for an 8-ball, and I have NEVER seen it any cheaper

    the emotional anguish i went through as a result of that dishonesty, having my expectations crushed, was hell

    but still i am here, posting and handicapping, having been through that

    that is my story, the raw truth of it, i hope you can put yourself in my shoes now

    It's about motivation. They convince themselves that the cards are stacked against them and the only way then achieve success on the field/court is perseverance. And most of these guys work "relatively" hard at their game to the exclusion of all else. When they finally get what they want, they talk about overcoming adversity because, to them, it was. The breakdown here is that they have lost touch with reality the rest of society/fans live through on a daily basis so their words ring hallow. It doesn't make it any less real to them, though.

    Perception is reality.
