Why Is Ohtani Not. Closer ??

Would be an all time great and great hitter

    Makes zero sense to
Pitch 5 innings not helping his team win games

Then in a game like today, causes bench issues having to repeatedly pinch hit

A great starter is way more valuable. Closers pitch what, 70 innings in a season He can pitch 200 as a starter. Closers are failed starters basically. Not quite a dime a dozen, but pretty close. If you can start, you start.

Angels off tomorrow, but do you know when Ohtani starts, does he always get the next day off as a hitter?

Aroldis Chapman also was a starter, Reds made him a closer. Cubs don’t win their World Series without Chapman

Aroldis Chapman never started a MLB game in his career. Had he started, he probably wouldn't still be in the game. He couldn't make it as a starter, so he became a closer. If you can't do you teach and if you can't start you close.

When he defected from Cuba and the Reds signed him, he was a starting pitcher. Had over 300+ innings as a starter
I recall initially the Reds had him starting games in the minors. I don’t recall why he agreed to become a closer, but he was a starting pitcher for 99% of his career in Cuba

That Angels team has two of the greatest ball players in the last quarter century.

I asked the same question about Trout five years ago,
Trout can do it all, why doesn't he just switch in the ninth inning to pitcher.

    Short answer.
Only Jesus can walk on water, Ohtani and Trout can't do everything.

Cuba is not MLB. He didn't have the reportoire. They figured he'd have a better career as a closer -- good call. But that doesn't mean the best pitchers should just become closers - hell no.

To think that Ohtani might hit 50 home runs and strike out 200 batters is crazy.

He is better starting and getting outs. Closers are just failed starting pitchers.

And why is Holland still closing on KC when they have 3 way way younger "lights out" relievers? That shit drives me nuts watching old yeller blow another save.
