Iowa Wrestling - Austin DeSanto's knee injury

Although we can’t 100% rule out the possibility of a long-term absence, there isn’t any smoke coming from Iowa City that DeSanto’s injury is season-ending.
Here’s one more thing we know about DeSanto, per Brands: He has been extremely healthy throughout the course of his wrestling life. Dealing with pain is new for the 21-year-old junior. That means DeSanto's mental strength could be as important as knee strength in his potential build-up toward the be-all, end-all March 19-21 NCAA Championships in Minneapolis.

One school of thought would be to keep DeSanto out of Iowa's final three duals — while working strength back into his knee in practice — before returning at the March 7-8 Big Ten Conference Championships at Rutgers. That'd give him 36 days between bouts.

That type of plan shouldn’t hurt DeSanto’s NCAA seeding. If he could stay in the 4/5 range, he'll have an excellent path to the NCAA semifinals. That was the exact approach Penn State 157-pounder Jason Nolf used after suffering a late-January knee injury in 2018. Nolf returned at Big Tens, got to the semifinals, then forfeited to preserve that knee for the NCAAs. Nolf was still rewarded with a No. 3 seed and went on to win an NCAA title.

Will be watching BTN tomorrow night.

Wisky vs. Mich hockey then Penn St vs Wisky wrastling.

Will be looking for wrestling lines in the SBR Book tomorrow.

I see the NCAA futures there. Tempted to pick up Penn St +300 but let’s face it Iowa -130 could be a steal. No injury default and last week’s match might not be nearly as close.

The televised ones on BTN typically are the best.

I think the PennSt @ Minnesota duel is on BTN live Sunday.

    Here's another write up.

    125 LBS

Brandon Meredith had his best shot at a Big Ten win last Sunday in the Maryland dual, and he wasn’t able to convert. While his opponent this week isn’t ranked, he does have a winning record and some bouts under his belt in conference - I expect Meredith will keep it close but won’t be able to convert a late takedown to tie the bout.
    Prediction: Barnett by decision
    Score: PSU 0, Wisconsin 3

133 LBS - Match of the Meet

Last week, RBY had the match in hand when Austin DeSanto injury defaulted. He’s the only undefeated wrestler at this weight left in the conference, despite being ranked #2; Gross lost pretty handily early in the year to DeSanto before avenging that loss at Midlands, and he’s got the upper hand here. But the bout should be close, and don’t be surprised if the results are flipped at the Big Tens and/or in Minnesota at the NCAAs.
    Prediction: Gross by decision
    Score: PSU 0, Wisconsin 6

    141 LBS

Nick Lee’s a man on a mission, I can’t say it enough - and the showdown to keep an eye on is next week’s. He’ll dominate Moran from the get go and accumulate over 2 minutes of riding time.
    Prediction: Lee by major decision
    Score: PSU 4, Wisconsin 6

    149 LBS

Verk can keep it interesting at this weight (provided he doesn’t try too hard to not give up the takedown, like at Nebraska), but Martin will likely be too much for him.
    Prediction: Martin by decision
    Score: PSU 4, Wisconsin 9

    157 LBS

Bo Pipher finally scored his first Big Ten dual victory versus Maryland last week, and it didn’t come too late. He’ll definitely have a shot at the win late in this bout; I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s able to ride Schaerenbrock for a full two minutes, but it won’t be enough as an early takedown will be the difference.
    Prediction: Scharenbrock by decision
    Score: PSU 4, Wisconsin 12

    165 LBS

Evan Wick is a very good wrestler, but Cenzo’s on another level so far this year. He’s actually got a Ridge Riley award finally, fergodsakes! And that march to his first conference title continues this week.
    Prediction: Cenzo by decision
    Score: PSU 7, Wisconsin 12

    174 LBS

Mark Hall had to match Cenzo’s cement mixer last week, and do it in under a minute. He won’t let himself get down like he did last week at Iowa, and will score big points in the meet’s bout with the most bonus.
    Prediction: Hall by pin
    Score: PSU 13, Wisconsin 12

    184 LBS

Aaron Brooks proved that he can hang with anyone last week - provided he passes the skin check. He has an opportunity to score bonus tonight, if he can take it; but I expect that Krattinger is able to fend him off late, and not give up the bonus.
    Prediction: Brooks by decision
    Score: PSU 16, Wisconsin 12

    197 LBS

The jury’s still out on why Shak wasn’t in the lineup Sunday, but hopefully he’s slowly but surely making his way back to 100% (as Casey Cunningham says). He’s facing a wrestler on Friday that on paper he should bonus; it won’t be close, but no bonus tonight.
    Prediction: Shak by decision
    Score: PSU 19, Wisconsin 12

    285 LBS

Nevills will be a great wrestler in the years to come, but he would have benefited from a redshirt year this season had Cassar not gotten injured. Heavyweight is completely stacked around the country and the conference this year, and it’ll be tough for him to break through with some great wins. He’ll have his opportunities this evening but won’t be able to convert at the end.
    Prediction: Hillger by decision
    Score: PSU 19, Wisconsin 15

This could make out to be a good match between these teams again. If it goes anything like the write up there'll be another comeback for the team victory.

An upset like Sebastian would make it real dramatic down the stretch and secure a win for Wisky.

    Good Luck Dark Star!

Before DeSanto's injury, 18 to 20 points at 133 pounds was a reasonable estimate at the Nationals

Now, the possibility of zero points at 133 exists.

Just thought I'd share this from Iowa/PSU. It's pretty cool when you get standing room only in a Big Ten basketball arena for wrestling. With pyrotechnics.

On Jan. 31, No. 1 Iowa vs. No. 2 Penn State became the most-watched wrestling telecast in BTN history as well as the day's highest-rated college sporting event across all networks. The Big Ten dual averaged 342,955 viewers, according to Nielsen Media Research, which eclipsed the Ohio State vs. Penn State meet in 2018 (309,265 viewers) by +11%.

Just checked into BTN, Brooks and Sebastian going at it.

Was at my son's black belt TKD testing, forgot the times were eastern.....missed the hockey and most of the wrestling.

Penn St. with the lead. Did Lee and Hall win? They were chalk.

Just like the write up predicted...lol.

The write up wasn't bad overall, it missed a couple and I think there was a substitute at 157.
