Yes, my challenge is still open. If you beat me in a game of Hexversi I will give you 500 points. If you can score even half of my score in a COMPLETED game I will give you 100 points. If I win, you owe me nothing. Go to http://itsyourturn.com to create a username(it's free and free to play). Once you do this I will invite you to a game. The game won't be live. You just move when it is your turn. Generally a few moves a day or so. Any other questions?

And yes, Hexversi is a variation of the game Othello. The theory is the same. If you are good at Othello you will be good at all the variations including Hexversi.

It's a very different game than Tic Tac Toe and Connect 4 but it's just as easy to learn. Below is a minute and a half video of how to play Othello/Reversi. Hexversi has the exact same rules but the board is shaped like a hexagon instead of a square.

As far as strategy goes... here's 1 tip: Corner pieces are VERY valuable because they cannot be flipped. Once you get a corner it is yours to keep. The player who gets the most corners usually wins the game. In Hexversi there are 6 corners where as in Othello/Reversi there are only 4.

As far as the number of mistakes goes... that's hard to say because perfect play is impossible in Hexversi. I don't play anywhere near perfect play but I play well and my strategy is sound. You can play Othello/Reversi online in real time against a computer. You can play it on your phone too. If you play a few games online vs a program you'll probably get the hang of it.

Here's a link for an Othello/Reversi program that you can play against online. https://www.mathsisfun.com/games/reversi.html

There are 3 different levels of difficulty. You can play a whole game in a few minutes. The computer moves immediately.

Not to my knowledge. But the rules and the theory are the same. There are several different variations to Othello aka Reversi. There's 6x6(I had a contest for this one years ago and 5 people ended up beating me but I know at least 1 person used a program), 8x8, 10x10, and Hexversi and the blackhole versions and maybe a few others. I've played all the ones I've mentioned and my experience has been the strength of the player stays approximately the same regardless of what board you are playing on. General strategy is probably best learned on 8x8(regular Othello/Reversi) which is the most common version and it's what I learned on as well. Play a few games of regular Othello in the link I provided in post #15. Once you get the hang of it, let me know when you want to play a game of Hexversi. I will only play Hexversi for the challenge because it's the only version that I'm aware of that doesn't have a program. There are programs for the other versions that can beat any human.

You're right. Back during the original 6x6 challenge over 7 and a half years ago we played a few games. My hats off to you for at least trying. I found a couple of posts in the original thread.

I've only played that particular program a couple of times on hard. I won those games but I doubt I would win every time. There are several programs that can beat me every time. I posted a link to that particular program because it was one of the first ones that came up on Google and you can start and play a game quickly. There are several programs that are far stronger than that one. I don't normally play programs. I also don't play 8x8 anymore. I just played a couple of games to see how strong that program was. I prefer Hexversi and 6x6 but I stopped giving away points for 6x6 because 6x6 has programs that can beat any human.

Did you play a few games at the link I provided in post #15? How did you do? New players often try to get as many pieces as they possibly can on each move. This is the WORST possible strategy that you can have. Here's a strategy tip... try this experiment, play a game and instead of trying to maximize your pieces... just try to flip as few pieces as you possibly can on each move(while being careful not to get eliminated). Try to flip only 1 or 2 pieces on each move until the majority of the board fills up or if you can get a corner. Once you get a corner, it's a good time to try to maximize your piece count. You might be surprised at how well this strategy works.

In many(probably the majority) of my games it looks as if I am losing for the majority of the game. This is an illusion. Piece count rarely ever means anything until the game is almost finished. The Othello/Reversi games are all about positioning. Ignore piece count entirely until the end of the game. If your positioning is superior you will win the game. Let me know when you're ready to play a game of Hexversi.
