Simple, he has leverage since he's entering his final guaranteed year (next year is a player option). No team is going to pay a king's ransom for him if it'll be nothing more than a year rental unless it's a team that's in the hunt near the trade deadline and need another player to go the distance. Even then, you're risking Kawhi not getting hurt or sucking at that time which would bring his stock down.

Hence why I mentioned unless they were in the hunt why pay a fortune for a rental. However, unless you're Boston or Philly, who's going to put up the assets to have him for 1 year? Assuming Pop refuses to deal with the West, Boston and Philly are the only two parties with a reason to get into a bidding war with the assets to do it and they may opt to sweat out SA until it gets near the trade deadline to see if he can stay healthy.

Lakers have Deng, Caldwell-Pope and Lopez on huge money (don't know how much longer they have to be honest) and who wants them? Caldwell Pope possibly but that's a stretch.

Don't see how they can make a championship winning team assuming they have to give up some solid young guys to the Spurs, leaves slim pickings on the bench?
