JAKARTA—Two Indonesian Christians were publicly whipped for gambling, a rare case of non-Muslims being punished here under Islamic law, as the country shifts toward a more politicized brand of the religion associated with the Middle East.
WSJ wants to make it sound barbaric.
In Indonesia they use a cane and the people are dressed in a thick robe to prevent them being cut.
It's weird for sure, but it's more about ceremonially humiliating them to teach the community a lesson than inflicting any sort of injury.
I had 6 strokes of a similar cane across my hands at school more than a few times.
Would love to instill some ceremonial flogging around here.
