Sorry guys, any form of serious gambling is not something to joke about. Watch the Cincinnati Kid clip and pay up.

Greatest gambling movie? It's not even in the top 15, and it's not really even a "gambling" movie, just a film about con men with gambling scenes. It's a terrific film because of the world class acting, but the story is ludicrous and has more plot holes then a colander. I could write 3 paragraphs on all the plot lines that are so ridiculous that it's hard to take the film seriously. Especially the "inside info" how they're tipped off that Lonagan cheats by setting up a deck to deal quad 9's and 3's in private games on a train only attended by rich high society types. How many quad 9's vs. quad 3's could have been dealt to the same group of players without suspicion? If he's really that good at cheating, he certainly isn't going to use the same set up over and over, and how would a bunch of grifters even hear about it anyway? And the hand where he changes the four 3' to four J's? There were 2 others dealt into that hand, what if one of them had been dealt a J? The whole scene is ridiculous. And we're supposed to believe that one of the biggest banker/criminals with connections to the criminal and gambling world in the whole Northeast wouldn't check around about how long this race book has been in town and who's involved with it before he plans to bet $500,000? It wouldn't be hard to find out they've only been open for a few weeks, and when nobody in town is connected to it, it wouldn't be hard to connect the dots to what's going on. There are plenty more examples, but those plot holes are so big, why bother.

The Gambler with James Caan 1973.

One of the best gambling movies of all time, if not the best. This clip is a bit blurry, but it's a great 15 minutes from the heart of the film.

Here's a scene from one of the best movies about gambling from the legendary director Robert Altman called California Split from 1974. For whatever reason, this gem isn't seen as often as some of the other better known gambling films, even though the director is one of the finest film makers in the history of cinema. It has one of the finest endings (albeit a non dramatic one) that catches you by surprise a bit.

No. Cincinnati beats you by a mile. However, I do like your bold scrutinizing of moves, etc. Reminds me of me.
Caan played a fool and degenerate gambler. Edward played the role of a genius card poker player, and one of my other favorites, McQueen, played the role of another younger genius card-shark who had never met his match, so, his lesson was learned just like all gamblers when they believe they are "The Very Best."

Stop embarrassing yourself. I LOVE the Cincinnati Kid, especially the subtle underlying elements in the film, but it's a character driven movie set in the south in the 1930's focusing on two top poker players and the big game. One of the underlying points of the film is how The Kid won't fool around with Shooters wife Melba even though she practically throws herself at him, but then, once Shooter disgraces himself and his long had reputation of a "straight shooter" by dealing a rigged deck, The Kid no longer has reservations about sleeping with her, only to be caught by his girlfriend Christian, who in spite of that waits to console him outside after he's been wiped out and destroyed by Lancey at the end. It's a GREAT film, but The Gambler is a movie much more about gambling itself with all the Dostoevsky applications and much more realistic. Actually, The Cincinnati Kid is one of my favorite films (especially since I'm a poker player), and McQueen and Robinson are legends.

But everyone's entitled to their own opinions. I knocked someone else's choice of The Sting as a top gambling movie for various reasons, but that doesn't make it gospel.

Here's a story you've probably already heard, but in case you haven't...............

Back in 1970's LA, the Hillside Stranglers (Bianchi and Buono) were killing girls horrifically that they would pick up on the streets. One day, they picked up a girl that they planned to abduct, rape, torture, and kill. Along the way in their car with the girl still oblivious to what the 2 fiends had in mind, they found out that girl was Catherine Lorre, the daughter of actor Peter Lorre. Apparently, they were big fans of Peter Lorre, and they let her go, and she never knew she had been in serious danger until they were arrested two years later and she recognized them from the press photo's.

Casino is the single greatest gambling movie ever made & if you disagree with me I will come to your house & punch you out.
    The sting?
    Cincinnati Kid?

Might have been good movies in their time but don't touch the cinematic experience Scorsese brings you on in Casino.

Both The Gambler's are weak with anti climatic endings.

While it is only Loosely based on actual facts, some scenes in casino, like when Ace Rothstein challenges Harry Reid at a senate hearing, make this movie even more enjoyable to watch. Knowing that some of these things actually happened in the middle of the desert back in the day make this one of the most compelling gambling movies of our generation.

There are great scenes in a lot of movies but Casino was certainly well done throughout. I tend to agree with Jay there.

I already posted this in another thread today and this isn't a movie, but a fun gambling scene nonetheless...

Yu wrng an I migt figh you ovr dis Bro? Gots it? Got that lingo from watching Rocky one too many times.

You like murders and violence, okay, have at it but this thread was about the best gambling scenes/movies, not, gangsters-whacking people, left and right, movie.

Call it what it is..the best gangster, casino oriented movie [it is], and I promise not to pulverize you on any first eyeball to eyeball close up.
Step up and let old Abe slap you right down, just as I did this new tough guy right here. Maybe he's a nice tough-guy, but I could care less. Cincinnati wins all bets.
