Most difficult professional sport to officiate?

    Baseball..... behind the plate
    Football
    Basketballl
    Tennis
    Soccer
    Hockey

Gotta be plate umpire or dealing with the NBA whiners?

I umpired division 3 basketball and baseball. I would have to say hockey. Although the parents of those 3rd grade kids that haven't figured out their kids are nerds is rough.

I don't follow those sports much; is it because of the offsides or because you have to be in shape?

    Thanks Laker.
    Great angle
    Didn't take that into consideration
But on a pro level it makes sense.

Soccer is on the short-list. Low-scoring sport. Every ref decision has huge impact on result of game.

I'd say basketball because there is a foul almost on every play that is missed.. Or how many times have we've seen players drive to the rim and get fouled but the whistle doesn't blow..

It's bang bang calls in hoop that are hard to see and make..

Refs don't see it or they aren't sure, maybe hoping the ref on the other side of the court had a better angle.. Then the whistle isn't blown and there is no foul called. Same with Traveling, holding, tap on the shooting hand during a shot, etc...

To be a ref in the NBA I think it's the toughest.... I have a family friend named Leon Wood whom is an NBA ref today that I've known since high school.. My older brother played on the same basketball team at St. Monica's catholic school in Santa Monica.... I know what's up anyways...

NFL - Is tough because of so many penalty fouls to look for on each play.. That's tough because of so many players on the field which each snap.. Time clock violations, off sides, and line calls you have the side judges for that.. Holding calls and illegal hits are tough to call sometimes with the other officials on the field of play especially.. You do have instant replay though for the big plays..

NHL - Gotta watch for the off sides, icing calls, illegal hits, high sticks, etc.. Break up fights and scuffles constantly, drop the puck in face offs, etc.. However you do have to skate your ass off the entire game to see the play, puck and stay just out hitting or play interference range..... NHL might be the easiest to ref and make calls but it's probably the most physically demanding..

MLB - Ump just has to see the ball to the plate and see balls and strikes, has to call check and strike swings as well... Base judges have the close calls and replay, the side ref has to call a swing or check as well... Being the Ump is tough but I imagine after years of calling balls and strikes you see them pretty clearly.. Watch for Balks, tagging runners, etc. Not that hard and I think the easiest sport to ref...

    My two cents..

baseball isn't difficult to officiate.. they're just ridiculous with their strike zones. not consistent. thats the only problem really. making up calls, can't do that.

There is no problem officiating hoops. There is a violation on every play, so it reallyt doesn't matter if you call it or not. Hoops is also the easiest sport to fix because no one is going to care if the Cav's are 15 point home favorites over the Lakers and win by 14. No one except the books that is...

    NFL looks very tough.

So much to catch and so many cameras that double check everything you call/miss immediately.

Soccer much easier as the decisions are more subjective most of the time.
