Ever bet against your favorite team just in case they lose?

As most of you know, I'm a die-hard Tiger fan. I'm tempted to take Oakland tonight so that I at least get something out of the night in case they go down. I wouldn't call it a "win/win" because obviously I want the Tigers to advance, but rather, a "win/not total loss." Do you ever make that kind of wager?

also bet against the pats in playoff games on the moneyline against the jets and ravens...the jets game i had a hunch and was a good price....the ravens game i just played it for the same reason id bet against the sox

Might have to do that tonight just as a safety net. No sense in getting kicked in the balls once (or twice if I backed Detroit) without assuring myself of an ice pack.

well, i guess it depends on how big of a fan you are, but
imo it makes absolutely no sense.
If you bet an amount which matters to you against your favorite team you will proably have this in your mind over the entire course of the game.

If you bet small money, which doesnt affect you mentally, it would have no effect in cheering you up if the tigers lose .

So its more like a lose/lose situation, than a win/win one.

it just depends on your mindframe....if 100 bucks is worth your team winning a elimination game to you...like it has been for me....than its cool...if your team loses and you win money at least theres a consolation prize in the end.....if you are a diehard fan and its worth a hundred for you to lose...it works

You're tempted to take Oak cause you think they're gonna win. Not for said reasons.

And you know it would be a cold day in hell before I bet against my teams. If rather take a dump on money then win it that way.

I bet against my team if I think it's the right side. For instance, the Raiders this week +9.

I did it once last year and it sucked ass. Put a good sized play on Auburn to cover at home vs Arkansas cause of how bad we sucked. I hate Auburn. We pounded the shyt out of them. I told myself "hey ya lost $ but your team won". Didn't work. Was still frustrated with losing the bet and on top of that I didn't get to enjoy the one good win we had all season. Couldn't stand "pulling" for Auburn to cover.

Never again will I bet the Razorbacks as a favorite or for a team to cover against us. Only us as dogs. At least that way if I lose the bet I'll already be pissed from losing anyhow and if we cover I'll know we played better than Vegas expected.

different betting a football spread than a moneyline.....your team could win a game and not cover...if you are playing a ml someone wins or loses....its cut and dry...no line to beat

No amount of money I can win on a bet ever makes me feel better so I don't ever do that.....More often than not I get greedy and go for the double win and bet on my team in a big game if I like the odds

Won alot on Jets ML over New England in the playoffs a few years ago but also have gotten burned before

Yeah I guess a few days later it feels better seeing more money in your account but initially I wouldn't be one bit happier

Also depends on the team and sport......Jets and SCAR football more priority than Yankees, Devils, and Nets

Overall just not a fan of hedging emotions, rather just be really fukkin happy or take my lumps

I think it may have been the second day of my gambling "life" and I decided to bet against my soccer team who had a huge european cup semi-final that day. I told people about that and they told me I was going about it all wrong, it's all or nothing, bet on your team or pass.

Nothing worse than watching a game with the ever so slightest of doubts on who to support, and it's kinda weak when your team loses to think "it's ok I made some cash". You're meant to be gutted and sulk when your team loses. That's what support is about. You have to be all out on your team.

At least that's the way I see it. GL with what you decide.

Nothing wrong betting against your soccer team. You use the money won to drown your sorrows at the bar.

First of all I don't drink so that's not an option for me.

Second of all you're meant to be unhappy when your team loses a huge game. It's part of what being a real fan is. You liv ethrough the ups and the downs. That said I don't think Americans who follow pro teams really have a bond with their teams as strong as football fans do here in England, I think a more appropriate comparison would be fans who support college teams in the States. That's the impression I get, and I could be wrong, Every fan is different anyway.

Now here I'm just talking about bets "to avoid disappointment" which was the topic of the thread. Deciding to bet or not against your team if you think their opponent has value is another debate. Personally I can't. Maybe I should, but I can't. Props to people who can.

Personally speaking not being a fan of a sporting team is probably not the best criteria for your observation but I get the premise. Seems a trifle shallow.

Lots more to being passionate about sports than being a fan of a team. You can still be a fan of the game itself.

Bigger picture allows for the unbiased assessment of any event wouldn't you think. Best of both worlds kind of thing.......

    yes

size of wager depends on cash amount in sportsbook.

so like last night i am a pirates fan. i only have 46.32 in sports account. i fukkin bet $5 on cards. that was the amount to equalize the pain.

if i have about $400 then maybe about $50.

i give specific examples incase someone needs a plan

Both NFL and NCAA are going tonight, and I lean the otherside on both.
