My school district was one of the first in the US to have a mainframe computer that our HS could time share (log in). The mainframe computers looked similar to this..
and we would log into it using a teletype like this...
On the left hand side was a tape reader and a tape puncher that looked like this...
This was a variation of morse code and was the reason why we use binary data (if it had a punch hole it was a 1 if it wasn't punched it was a 0).
It's been so long ago, I can't remember exactly how much storage would be on an average roll of tape but I think it was like 700 - 1,000 bytes. That was considered a ton of memory to send to the mainframe.
The creators of the Univac went bankrupt. They didn't know how to run a business. While IBM took over the mainframe business then the personal computer. IBM basically killed the 7 other companies. IBM grew so large that the government filed anti trust cases that took over a decade. This allowed IBM to dominate the market. They partnered with Intel to develop the microprocessors and Microsoft developed the software. In a twist of irony, Microsoft went on to become much bigger than IBM just by marketing the operating system. Microsoft grew so dominant that 20 years later the goverment ruled it a monopoly as it was twice the size of IBM.
Those were the days. My classmate's father worked for HP and he created the first electronic calculator, the 9100. It had a CRT tube and was bigger than an old typewriter. A few years later he was the design head on the HP-35, the first scientific calculator...
His son would come to class with experimental shit. He had a calculator with a 4 line LED. That didn't come to market until several years later. It could also beep for sound.
