Never happen.... Nobody worth a damn wants to follow a legend and that program was a dumpster fire before we found out about the off field ”activitys”... Talent level isnt penn st level no qb and they look cool with being losers would have to change the whole culture..., not worth it why leave bama?

When judging the quality of a coaching search, it is important to remember that it is the result of the search, and not the search itself, that matters. Two years from now, we will be in a much better position to evaluate whether Penn State’s search for Joe Paterno’s replacement, now at eight weeks, was a cunning work of genius or an abject failure.

After all, it took Alabama 38 days to replace Mike Shula back in 2006, providing countless hours of fodder for sports talk shows and plenty of opportunities for second-guessing. Yet there were not too many complaints about that protracted process after Alabama landed Nick Saban. In coaching searches, the sausage is much more important than the way in which it was made.

Who will the next coach of the Nittany Lions be? No one is sure. Maybe not even Penn State. It is unlikely that Mike Munchak, considered the top choice among former players, will reverse course after his declarations last week that he was staying with the Tennessee Titans. It is possible that New England’s offensive coordinator, Bill O’Brien, could have a change of heart and not pursue N.F.L. openings. But has Penn State really fallen so far that it is now a nice backup plan?

Penn State’s search has reached a critical point, with the N.F.L.’s regular season now over and the Nittany Lions giving up 600 yards in a blowout bowl loss to Houston on Monday. There are two possibilities left. And they are as extreme as the differences between Shula and Saban.

The first is that Penn State has executed a deftly orchestrated search that has been so calculated, exacting and secretive that it has had a big-name hire lined up for weeks. The interim athletic director David M. Joyner and the board of trustees member Ira M. Lubert, who are leading the search, will be able to take a bow when a coveted and veteran head coach is finally introduced.

The alternative is not so cheery. It involves Penn State’s search committee being overmatched by the nuanced and cutthroat world of coaching searches and ending up with someone who is prepared to be little more than a placeholder. That would be a coach brought in to answer the hard questions, expunge the program of the stench of the Jerry Sandusky scandal and then be in a position to be jettisoned after a few unremarkable seasons.

“I don’t know it has to be that,” said the former Penn State quarterback Todd Blackledge, now an ESPN analyst. “I’d like to think it doesn’t have to be that, but I guess it could be.”

Shula was a relatively anonymous and unpopular hire at Alabama in 2003, but he guided the program while it dealt with N.C.A.A. sanctions and went 26-23 in four seasons. He was fired after the unglamorous work was complete. Saban came in when the job was more attractive, much as a coach like Al Golden could arrive at Penn State in a few years, when it will be a few years removed from the Sandusky scandal.

“It is not going to be a quick fix,” Blackledge said. “My hope is that they land the right guy for the job at the right time. It’s got to be the guy for this moment. It’s got to be someone who is ready to embrace all that it entails.”

The sense so far is that Penn State is not particularly interested in a splashy hire or a major financial commitment. (And big-name coaches like Tony Dungy and Boise State’s Chris Petersen are not lining up to deal with the mess at State College.)

Most of those said to have interviewed with Penn State are assistants like Brian Norwood, the associate head coach at Baylor; Tom Clements, Green Bay’s quarterbacks coach; Greg Roman, an assistant for San Francisco; and three from the Nittany Lions’ staff: Ron Vanderlinden, Larry Johnson and Tom Bradley, who acted as the interim coach. That is a list of distinguished assistants who would make undistinguished hires, and Penn State in its current environment would be a bad place for on-the-job training on how to be a head coach.

The reluctance to hire a proven head coach could also result in a bad football team, and serve as a weekly reminder each fall about the effects of the scandal.

The slowness of the search has also hurt Penn State’s recruiting. Just 14 players have committed to play for the Nittany Lions next season. Only three recruits have rescinded commitments to Penn State, but more could after evaluating the style of football that the new coach espouses.

There are plenty of solid college head coaches who could come in and help restore the program on and off the field. But Penn State has shown very little interest in candidates like Air Force’s Troy Calhoun, Mississippi State’s Dan Mullen or Wake Forest’s Jim Grobe.

Those would be safe and solid hires, the type that a search firm would have recommended to Penn State. But according to agents who have been dealing with Penn State, they have spoken directly with Joyner, not with a search firm. Instead, Joyner, an orthopedic surgeon, has been learning the world of coaching hires one phone call at a time.

Many people still consider Penn State an elite job because of its recruiting base and tradition.

Whether the coach hired in the next few weeks oversees a return to prominence remains to be seen. All that matters is the result, but right now the search appears to be trending toward a Shula. And with each passing day, the chances of a Saban appear to be decreasing.

Well if anyone would jump on Cash for Coaching...it would be Saban....the guy has proved in the past that jumping is no big thing. On the Penn State side...they're going to need to pay a premium if they want to rise from the ashes with a big name...and Saban would be a huge kill. Urban Meyer would probably have chest pains within a month if he knew Saban was going to the Big 10....the recruiting war would get pretty interesting...that's for sure
