the biggest difference in live is real people... the cards are still random same as online but you should try and profile people , the old women , the young guy w/ headphones , loud mouth drunk, etc use this to your advantage.

on the other side of this pay attention to your own image... clothing , what you say to people, etc.

Basically this will be a large social gathering for many. You will probably have more poker knowledge than 90% of folks in there but try to stay social. If someone offers a drink take them up on it. And watch your oppponents for hand strength ., tells, etc...

yes....i find looking right at their eyes says a lot.....also may be weird but breathing patterns too....I find when they're breathing harder than normal most likely they have air.

All I really play anymore is live poker. Online is so full of shit it ain't funny. A few tips for live poker are always wear shades at the table. The eyes are a dead giveaway most of time. With shades nobody knows your looking at them or what your looking at. Also learn how to shuffle your chips. Guys that don't are usually rookies. Gl

id say physical tells r overrated, try to concentrate on their betting patterns.

one thing i have seen many times is if someone makes a speech then moves all in, they r loaded almost everytime.

one thing i have noticed more live is that people are liable to call with anything early on, so i tend to sit back more at the outset. i like to play flops as cheap as possible early on. no use building pots oop.

once we get late, a lot of structures are bad and people are forced to play for all their stack pretty often. dont be afraid to shove all in. amazing some of the laydowns people make. they play way too nitty at the end.

do not be late. people love to show up late, but if someones on a mission to give away their chips, they are probably already busted by the time you get there, or low at the very least. at any rate, you get more hands to see how your table plays.

stay out of the "debating" of poker. try and concentrate on the task at hand. if you arent 100% sure, dont open your mouth.

do be nice to people if they ask about you etc. theyll be more willing to give information.

if this is at a social club, then the play is gonna be even worse then a casino. people are there to socialize and probably know each other. itll be a glorified home game.

on the subject of moving the button which i see a lot of people i have commented on:

i personally like to keep the action going and the game moving. most dealers wont have a problem with this in smaller games. if there are antes, gather them up. the more hands you play the better. if the dealer bitches, then stop doing it.

a hell of a lot better advice then wearing sunglasses to a social club and shuffling your chips. you are bad or dying to be good, one or the other. 99% of the sunglasses, poker shirts, at smaller buy ins (under $500) which id be almost shocked if this wasnt, are guys that think they are better then they are, or desperately wish they were better.

Don't look at the flop immediately, watch people's reaction to the flop first. Look at player's "turtle" like movements. If arms and head are leaning forward after flop, turn, or river, then they like their hand and you better have something good. If they start going into their shell, then they don't like their hand and can be a good bluffing opportunity. If a player checks then grabs for chips to scare you off when it's your turn to act after the flop, move all in if the pot and/or blinds are relatively higher, he's likely on a draw. As mentioned earlier watch people's hands.

you guys worry way too much about tells. nothings ever that obvious unless your playing a super small game.

3 more things:

1. barking did allude to this a bit, sometimes youll see people try n bet when its not their turn. this can be read as strength.

2. if its an allin and they motion for a friend to come see the hand, thats strength as well.

3. play ABC poker if its anything more then heads up (which it likely will be in the early stages). the weakness of most of these players in social type settings is calling too much, so why not exploit that? makes little sense to try n bluff calling stations.

and honestly, if you are an online player playing live FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER, why would you worry about looking for tells anyways? youre not gonna be good at spotting your first time outta the gate anyways.

Play the player and not the card. Be more intuitive of your players and see what they can tell you. Don't look at your cards until you have to act. You can use that time to check out your opponent.

So, how did the tourney go? thetrinity and barkingtoad had some really good advice.

The key things are really about paying attention and acting only in turn.

So always be watching the other players (especially to your left) and only act/look at your cards when it is your turn. Also, the suggestion about watching the people when the flop/turn/river happens is good, even when you are not in the hand. The more info/data you can gather on people the better.

Well, got there and brought in (it was only $15, nothing big) and had about 50 people walking around. I think about 60 people played in it, and I was able to finish 6th. I won nothing but 4 bounties wroth a measly 2 bucks each.

I lost 7 dollars but overall had a pretty good sharing if you ask me. I knew it would happen. I am one of those players that will almost always make the final table but NEVER win. and in these types of Tourneys you have to win to make any money.
