That would actually make sense. Which is why it's not counted that way. Read that article from the NY Times again. You'll see that they are counting retirment benefits paid out and the salaries of federal workers. Which tells me it doesn't matter which department they are in, (education, agriculture, defense, whatever) if they work for the federal government and are paid by the federal government, that money is being counted.

But say you're right, say they aren't counting the pay for military workers, they are still counting retirement benefits, and anybody that wants to make a point about welfare and the states by including retirement benefits should be discounted off hand.

If you want to talk about federal aid going to pay for schools, roads, etc in these states, fine, that's fair game. I can understand Californians being upset their income tax dollars are paying for schools in Arkansas. But the stats here are much broader than that, and it's bullshit.

Being a labor guy means you can't possibly be neutral when discussing politics. All "labor guys" are as biased towards the democratic party as Rush Limbaugh is towards the republicans. The republicans are doing everything they can to rid our country of unions as the usefulness of unions disappeared over 50 years ago. The GOP knows full well that any company that uses organized labor can't possibly compete with another company that is intelligent enough NOT to deal with unions.

Liberal democrats do this because when they compare stock market performance based on which party controls congress (a far more realistic and logical comparison), they realize that the financial markets perform far better under republicans than they do under democrats which is to be expected. Therefore, liberal democrats will NEVER mention how the stock market performs based on which party controls congress because they don't like the results of that comparison.

The democrats strongly support:

1. ORGANIZED LABOR - Unions are an absolute earnings killer.
2. Higher corporate taxes - Another earnings killer.
3. Trial lawyers/frivolous lawsuits - Getting sued all the time can't possibly help a businesses bottom line.

Raising the capital gains tax requires congressional approval. Obama would never have been able to implement his policies like ObamaCare if republicans controlled either house of congress.

Mayan, I couldn't be happier. I'm in my early 40's and am financially secure enough to never have to work another day in my life. The only threat to my utopian existence is if socialists like Barack Obama continue to plunge our country into higher and higher deficits which will erode my savings.

Admittedly, republicans aren't great in the area of deficits either but at least I got the support of democrats when Bush was overspending. Now that Obama is overspending at 3X the rate of Bush, liberal democrats like yourself are silent and giving Obama a free pass.
