Degenerates Defined
Degenerate is term thrown around a lot on this and other gambling forums. It is a rather vague however and overused very much like the term sharp. If you're using the term degenerate to insult someone it would be helpful to others around you to further classify the person in question so that they may too partake in the ribbing. Note - There may be commingling of degenerate subspecies so when insulting someone feel free to borrow from the component parts. Without further ado:
The Recreational Degenerate
This person usually only bets when they want to make watching a sporting event more interesting. They bet small amounts but may deviate occasionally while drunk/high or for special occasions (Superbowl,NCAA Tourney,on their birthday,while breaking up with a girlfriend/divorce etc.). They might bet just for action but this is not their primary motivation. When the Recreational Degenerate does bet due to wanting action they usually express regret afterwards since the internal mechanisms for regulating their dysfunction are still in tact. The Recreational Degenerate will be fine long term in their role as the loveable loser. They are harmless to themselves and their families since they recognize their limitations even if they do not acknowledge them openly. This is the category 99% of bettors should strive to belong in.
The Bigtime Degenerate
This person resembles the recreational degenerate in every way except for one:They lie consistently and about everything in a sad attempt to make their average lives appear better than they really are. These guys brag about everything and anything. They are betting 10 dimes a game ($1), banging 9.5/10 women (hand), living in mansions (small apartment/parents basement) and have high paying jobs/mob connections/inherited wealth (Unemployed or cubicle jockeys/one fifteenth Italian/receiving aid from parents).
These people are mostly just an annoyance to everyone who can easily see past their bullshit which is not much of a challenge in reality since they are hilariously bad at keeping up the facade. Usually when found out they will argue for some time against the categorization but eventually disappear. They will reappear sometime later (1 week max) under a new name because they are dependent on the forums for the support that fills this void of inadequacy they have inside themselves.
The Bigtime Degenerate is arguably the most pathetic of the group but because they provide entertainment value they are not ostracized from the community entirely. Again they are mostly harmless and if you find someone/yourself belonging in this category don't fret because you can still change - not.
The Psuedosharp Degenerate
This person has been involved in gambling for some time and has learned the terms,strategies and milieu. The problem however is that almost all of them have not learned how to gamble properly or at best only half learned. They misapply information consistently, create nonsensical systems or simply bet based on their expert handicapping ability (staring at a screen/stats). These people are often described as touts, system players, feel based handicappers etc.
The Psuedosharp Degenerate is a dangerous subspecies. They are dangerous because they genuinely believe they have an edge when in reality none exists. This inevitably leads to a martingale like blowup scenario or a slow bleed type death to their respective bankrolls. They may quit after this event citing the rigged nature of gambling or may try again doing the same thing.
The common thread with all Psuedosharp degenerates however is their completely bullheaded disregard for any information that might help them if it is contrary to their own views. They know best and even if you point out the obvious "I hate money" type results of their betting they will brand you a hater.
The Psuedosharp is usually only dangerous to themselves but more often than not their continued involvement with gambling will lead to their transformation into the last subspecies of degenerate.
The Full Blown Degenerate or those persons possessed by Gamblor (The wretched god of gambling)
The Full Blown Degenerate is a bettor out of control.They are the proverbial freight train coming off the tracks at 100 MPH. They bet solely for action. They are done with any pretense of a system or edge. Their betting is not limited to sports either. They will bet on anything and everything as long as there is a willing participant. They will not stop even if they have depleted all of their money, their families money and every willing funding source available to them. Once they have reached that point they will start breaking the law if they have not already done so.
Most ironic of all and sickeningly so these people bet to lose. These people are broken. They enjoy the feeling of losing and are uncomfortable with winning. They have based their whole lives around losing and warped all their emotions, opinions and actions to correspond with this view of the world. They will cheat their jobs, friends, family and random strangers as long as it keeps them in action. At this point 1 of 2 things will occur. They will kill themselves or hit rock bottom one of multiple times in an attempt to change. They can never become winning gamblers or belong to any other subspecies.
