Did Miami Heat lose on purpose yesterday?

They let Sixers close the game on a 10-0 run. They needed an extra sellout home game to pay for the salaries of their 3 starters. That's another 5 million in ticket sales at least if not more.

    I can see it now...

Spoelstra: Hey guys, I was just informed ownership is broke. We need you to go out there and throw this game so they can cover our salaries in game 5.

Lebron: Ok, coach. I will go out there and lay down.

If this were the case they would have been broke the final week of the season. Players aren't paid in the playoffs only for the regular season.

NEW YORK - NBA commissioner David Stern acknowledges the tremendous success the league is enjoying this season. He estimates that gross revenues will surpass $4 billion.
That said, Stern says that the game's financial structure must change. Speaking Thursday at the NBA's office during the Associated Press Sports Editors' annual commissioners meeting, Stern painted a bleak financial picture for NBA teams.
"We are still likely to lose collectively somewhere in the neighborhood of $300 million, which is lower than $370 million of a few years ago and $340 [million] last year," Stern said. "But we still remain very much intent on having a system that actually allows us to both have a sustainable business model."
The system Stern is talking about is having more games being played in the playoffs to make money from ticket sales and TV deals.

Deuce is partially right, they aren't paid a per-game salary in the playoffs. They are compensated a bonus for each round further in the playoffs they go.

I also have news for you Pavy. One playoff game doesn't net all that much when you look at the grand scheme of things. There is a ridiculous amount of overhead.

if the Miami Heat didn't make money this year, the NBA is worse off than we know.

that said, the owners probably aren't crying about having one more home game revenue.
